Ten held in Class A drugs raids

Ten people have been arrested following drugs raids in Manchester and Merseyside.

Police carried out eight searches into the supply of Class A drugs earlier.

The eight men and two women, aged between 27 and 56 and from the Manchester and Liverpool areas, have been arrested, the North West's organised anti-crime unit, Titan, said.

Det Supt Jason Hudson said: "We will continue to target those that supply and distribute controlled drugs in our community and this investigation is part of that process."        

Two held after Northern Quarter violence

Two men have been arrested following violent clashes on Saturday in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

Trouble broke out shortly after 18:10 at the junction of Hilton Street and Tib Street.

Men aged 20 and 24 have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and remain in custody for questioning.

Witnesses, particularly those who may have footage of the incident, are asked to contact Greater Manchester Police (GMP) or Crimestoppers.

Detective Sergeant Patrick Connell, of GMP’s City of Manchester Team, said: “We have arrested two people who remain in custody but our investigation continues."

Travel: Four-car crash causes M60 delays

A crash involving four cars has resulted in a lane closure and queuing traffic on the M60 anti-clockwise at junction 1, the Stockport Pyramid.

Congestion goes back to junction 5, Princess Parkway, while the M56 to junction 4, Wythenshawe, is also busier than usual.

Prime Minister's Questions: Schools' water bills raised

A Greater Manchester MP is urging the Government to force United Utilities to reduce the cost of water bills faced by schools across the North West.

MP Mary Robinson asked Theresa May about the issue at Prime Minister's Questions, and said she wanted schools to be classed as "community assets", so they be charged on a different banding system.

Schools in the region pay £27m a year for water charges, while those in the south of England pay just £11m.

Travel: Collapsed manhole closes Whitefield road

Radcliffe New Road in Whitefield is closed in both directions between the Dales Lane junction and the Blackburn Street junction because of emergency repairs following a collapsed manhole.

A diversion via Dales Lane, Ringley Road and Stand Lane is in place.

Paralympics 2016: Dame Sarah Storey wins time trial for 13th gold

Britain's Dame Sarah Storey claimed her 13th Paralympic gold medal by winning the road cycling C5 time trial in Rio.

Her victory took GB to 35 golds, surpassing their tally at London 2012.

Storey has now won two events at these Games, her triumph in the 3km pursuit on the track making her Britain's most successful female Paralympian.

The 38-year-old from Eccles, who was born without a functioning left hand, has won 24 Paralympic medals since her first Games as a swimmer in 1992.

Clash over grammar schools continues

Labour's Lisa Nandy, MP for Wigan has said Theresa May's plans to introduce new grammar schools are hugely divisive and marks the end of her "honeymoon period" as prime minister.

Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said grammar schools segregated children, with the vast majority losing out. 

Ms Nandy agrees, saying:

Her first big idea as prime minister is to go back to the 1950s and condemn millions of children to failure.

Tram tickets to Manchester City game valid for rescheduled fixture

Metrolink tickets bought last night to get to the postponed Champions League match at the Etihad can be reused for tonight’s rearranged fixture.

Torrential rain during last night's thunderstorms forced Manchester City's match against Borussia Monchengladbach to be abandoned and suspended tram services across the network.

Transport for Greater Manchester's head of customer services, Rachel Spencer, said: “No-one could have predicted the extent and impact of the storm.

"We will be honouring the tickets bought.. by those fans who braved the conditions only to find the match postponed."

A grant of more than £28m has been awarded to Greater Manchester's devolved health service to pay for research into new tests and treatments.

The money was awarded as the region's hospitals were granted Biomedical Research Centre status, in what has been described as a "landmark moment".

It will be used to drive forward research into cancer, respiratory disease and other serious conditions. Millions of people will benefit, the region's NHS trusts said.

A 51-year-old convicted murderer, whose last known address was Oldham, has absconded from an open prison in Derbyshire.

Darren Jackson was serving part of his life sentence at HMP Sudbury when he disappeared on Tuesday.

Jackson, who was sentenced in March 1986, had been released and later recalled to the prison.

HS2 'needs realistic timetable', say MPs

MPs say the HS2 rail link needs a "realistic timetable" and believe the current schedule is "overly ambitious".

The Public Accounts Committee sais it was "not convinced" that the first phase of the £56bn rail line - linking London and Birmingham - will open at the end of 2026 as planned.

It also urged the government to clarify the route and costs for the second phase, linking to Manchester and Leeds. A government spokesperson said the project was "on time and on budget".  

Over 100 emergency calls made during storms

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service reported "high numbers" of 999 calls made after the storms hit the area last night.

GMFRS said it received 106 calls between 18:30 and 20:00 from people reporting flooding and weather-related issues.

They included a woman and children trapped inside a car in flood water under a railway bridge in Stockport and electrical faults caused by flooding water.

The underground car park of an apartment block in Manchester Green Quarter, near to Victoria Station, was badly flooded in the storms.

Water levels have risen in the car park in Cypress Place and resident Saroj Shoker said: "I woke up this morning to the find the staircase down to level -3 flooded and barriers up to stop people accessing the car park from both inside and outside."

She said she was "devastated" and concerned to hear this had happened before and almost 30 cars were written off last time.  

Staff from City Living have been working since the early hours trying to pump the water out but it could take days, residents have been told.  

Research funding of £28m given to hospitals

Hospitals in Manchester have been given more than £28m to work together on research into the diagnosis and treatment of diseases - including cancer and respiratory conditions.
