Water danger warning as temperatures soar

As temperatures are set rise once again, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has issued a water safety warning

Students film zombie movie across Wigan for summer school project

Students from Greater Manchester and Lancashire have been filming a zombie movie on the streets of Wigan.

The Hellions is the latest production from the British Youth Film Academy’s Summer School, based at Runshaw College.

Students aged between 16 and 21 have filmed at locations across the borough including Wigan Pier, Mesnes Park, Haigh Hall and Leigh’s Bedford High School.

Pirlo denies speaking to Daily Mail about Pogba

Former Juventus star Andrea Pirlo has denied ever speaking to the Daily Mail about Manchester United's Paul Pogba, who he played alongside at the Turin club.

On Saturday, the newspaper reported that the Italian midfielder had said his former club were "still laughing" about selling Pogba back to United for almost £87m more than they purchased him for in 2012.

In a strongly worded Instagram post, the New York City player said: "Just to make it clear, I never gave any interview to the Daily Mail talking about Pogba and Manchester"

Stockport nursing home told to improve by health watchdog

A nursing home in Stockport has been rated "inadequate" and given six months to improve by the Care Quality Commission.

Residents at Cale Green Nursing Home on Adswood Lane told inspectors that they felt safe in the home and with the kind and caring staff.

However, the report by the health watchdog found people to be at risk of harm through safety breaches including the unsafe management of medication. 

Most delayed flights from UK airports revealed

A flight from Manchester to New York has the worst record for daily delays, BBC research has revealed.

Aviation data analysed by BBC News uncovered the routes and airports where customers faced the worst punctuality.

The most delay-afflicted flight was from Manchester to New York which was delayed by an average of 88 minutes.

Former Man City player dies after being Tasered by police

Former Manchester City footballer Dalian Atkinson has died after being shot with a Taser by police in Shropshire.

West Mercia Police said officers responded to a report of concern for the safety of a man at about 01:30 BST in the Trench area of Telford.

A Taser was used on the 48-year-old man and after receiving medical help, he was pronounced dead at about 03:00.

Mr Atkinson also played for Aston Villa, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday.

Town hall bells fall silent for essential repair work

Rochdale Town Hall's bells have fallen silent for 10 days as they undergo repairs.

The council says it's the first time in over 30 years that the bells won't chime to mark the time across the town.  

Murder accused boys appear in court over Asthon-under-Lyne death

Four boys, aged between 12 and 17, accused of murdering a man in Ashton-under-Lyne have appeared in court. 

They were charged with the murder of 43-year-old Bradley Moore, a father of four, who died after being found badly injured outside a McDonald's restaurant last month.

They will make their next court appearance in November. 

A man in his 40s who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving remains on bail but has not been charged.

Eccles crash pilot in hospital 'with severe leg and head injuries'

Pilot of crashed plane 'conscious and alert' in hospital

The pilot of the single seat plane has been taken to Salford Royal Hospital and is “conscious and alert”.

An North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said despite early reports suggesting another person was involved, only the pilot was on board when the plane crashed.

She said an air ambulance was "dispatched after the plane crashed into trees", but the patient "was taken [to hospital] by land ambulance just after 1pm".

A single seater plane has cashed in a wooded area next to Barton Aerodrome in Eccles.

One passenger is being treated by the Air Ambulance Service while the airport fire brigade is trying to rescue the pilot.

Underwater search for driver after car plunges into reservoir

Divers are searching a reservoir after a car left a country road and plunged into the water.

West Yorkshire Police said the driver is believed to have been the only person in the car which went into Booth Wood Reservoir, on the moors between Halifax and Rochdale, close to the M62 motorway.

Officers said the driver's family have been informed but specialist searchers have yet to find the car, which was travelling west along Oldham Road last night.

Flight carrying Manchester City staff to Bucharest evacuated

A plane carrying journalists and Manchester City staff was evacuated following an air conditioning fault that caused water vapour in the cabin.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said there was "a smell of smoke in the cabin".

The flight, operated by Romania-based charter airline company Carpatair, was being prepared to fly to the country ahead of Tuesday's clash between City and Steaua Bucharest.

No players were on board and everyone has now reboarded.

Shots fired at Wigan house in 'targeted attack'

Police are investigating after a man shot at a house in Wigan in a "targeted attack".

The man approached an address on Harrow Road, Wigan and fired at the house, before running off in the direction of Hind Road on Saturday evening

No-one was in the house at the time, and no-one was injured, but police have asked for any witnesses to contact them.

Four years after a scheme to regenerate shopping in Stockport, leaders in the area are looking at how to build on the success for the future.

London 2012 champion Kenny, from Bolton, came out on top in the first two races to win the best-of-three final.

Russia's Denis Dmitriev beat Australia's Matthew Glaetzer in the race for bronze.

Kenny, 28, has now won as many Olympic golds as rower Sir Steve Redgrave and fellow cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins.

Actress Maxine Peake speaks at Peterloo event in Manchester

Actress Maxine Peake joined the annual Peterloo massacre commemorations in Manchester City Centre.

At least 10 people were killed and hundreds injured in 1819 when troops charged a crowd at St Peter's Field who were demanding political reform.

Talks are ongoing about creating a permanent memorial, the Peterloo Massacre Campaign said.

Ms Peake, from Bolton, said the event highlighted the importance of "democracy and liberty".

Rio Olympics 2016: Jason Kenny wins fifth Olympic gold

Jason Kenny's victory in the men's sprint final takes his gold tally in Rio to two after he and Scottish rider Skinner were part of the British team that won the men's team sprint on Thursday.

As well as winning the individual sprint title in 2012, Kenny also claimed a team sprint gold in London.

He also won the team sprint at the 2008 Games, with his solitary silver coming in the individual sprint in Beijing, when he was beaten in the final by Hoy.

The Bolton cyclist's success also continued Britain's track cycling dominance in Rio. They have won four of the six events entered.
