    Eight year-old Keira-Louise Arnold, whose dad died after losing his battle with cancer, has completed her 1,000 postcard challenge to raise funds for the hospice that cared for him.

    Her grandmother promised to give her £100 to donate to Dr Kershaw's Hospice in Royton if she received 1,000 postcards by the end of June - and she has hit the target with postcards coming from as far as Australia and India. 

  4. Two jailed over gun used in Salfod doorstep shooting

    Two men have been jailed for transporting a gun that had been used to shoot a mother and her seven-year-old son on their doorstep.

    Jayne Hickey and son Christian were shot when two men knocked at their front door in Salford last October.

    The gun was linked to nine shootings in Liverpool between 2011 and 2014.

    Aldair Warmington, 29, of no fixed address, and Christopher Hall, 46, of Little Hulton, were jailed for six and five years for firearm offences.

  5. Football: Sir Alex Ferguson says Giggs has 'steel' to be a manager

    Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says it was time for Ryan Giggs to leave the club and that he has the "steel" to succeed in management.

    Giggs, 42, ended a 29-year stay at United after new boss Jose Mourinho decided not to retain him on his staff.

    Ferguson says long-time rival Mourinho was right to go with "his own man" - long-time assistant Rui Faria and told BBC Sport: "It is time Ryan stood on his own feet, got out there and accepted the challenge."

  9. Teenager 'traumatised' after robbery by three balaclava-clad men

    A man who was robbed by three men posing as delivery drivers in Lostock, near Bolton, has been left "completely traumatised".

    The 19-year-old was approached by three men wearing balaclavas who were armed with hammers, police said.

    The man was tied up with cable ties while his mouth and eyes were covered with tape.

    The robbers then searched the house and stole cash.

    Det Sgt Robert Parker, of Greater Manchester Police, described the attack as "horrific".

    A man has died and 10 people have been injured in a multi-vehicle accident near Rochdale which has caused huge tailbacks on the M62.

    There is queuing traffic in both directions between junction 20 at Rochdale and junction 21 at Milnrow and westbound vehicles are being turned around. 

    Congestion is stretching back to junction 18 at Simister Island and junction 23 at Huddersfield.

    Police said the dead man was yet to be identified. A man and woman also suffered serious injuries. 

  11. Man stuck on M62 moves 'about a mile' in 50 minutes

    Dom Busby, who's stuck westbound on the M62 following the fatal multi-vehicle accident, told BBC Radio Manchester:  "I have done - in the last 50 minutes - about a mile."

  13. Two men sought after man's jaw broken in Bolton assault

    Greater Manchester Police are searching for two men who fractured a man's jaw during an assault in Bolton in May.

    The man was outside The Corner Club bar in the early hours of 22 May when a scuffle broke out and he suffered multiple facial injuries.

    He later underwent surgery to have a metal plate wired to his jaw.

  14. Motorway police hope to re-open eastbound M62 'soon'

    North West Motorway Police say they hope to re-open the eastbound M62 at junction 21 soon following a fatal multi-vehicle accident five hours ago.

    However, the westbound carriageway will remain closed.

  16. Bolton road to be shut overnight for three months for resurfacing

    St Peter's Way in Bolton is to be closed every night for three months to carry out resurfacing working.

    Bolton Council said it will be shut weekday evenings from 4 July between 19:00 and 06:00 for 13 weeks to allow the work to take place.

    In the daytime, the speed limit will be reduced to 30mph in both directions.

  17. United defender ill with food poisoning

    Manchester United say defender Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday.

    Pictures appeared on social media showing the 26-year-old in hospital with his head and hand bandaged, prompting reports he'd been stung by a jellyfish. 

    However United say the defender is now feeling fine.

  18. Mountain rescue volunteer from Stockport dies during call-out

    A mountain rescue volunteer from Stockport has died during a call-out in the Peak District.

    Ken Blakeman, 69, had been a member of the Kinder Mountain Rescue Team for more than 40 years.

    He collapsed on Saturday while making his way to a young Duke of Edinburgh walker who needed help.
