  4. Man dies after assault in Crumpsall

    A man in his fifties has died following an assault in Crumpsall. 

    He was found with serious injuries at a property in the Charminster Drive area shortly before 07.10 and died later in hospital.

    A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning.

  5. Healthcare reform in Salford

    A radical reform of NHS and social care services is being launched in Salford.    


    The aim is to reduce hospital admissions in the city and make annual savings of about£27m by 2021.

    It will involve nearly 450 council staff transferring to Salford Royal.

  7. Battle of the Somme: Cheetham Hill church porch tribute

    A tribute to two men who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme was posted this morning in the church porch at St Chad's Roman Catholic Church, Cheetham Hill.

    The church has also restored its war memorial after an appeal to people to parishioners to fill in missing names on the memorial.

  8. Man wanted on prison recall

    Police are looking for a Wigan man who is wanted on recall to prison. 

    Convicted burglar Dylan Latham, 22, was released on licence on 17 June but has breached his conditions.

    Latham has links to the Beech Hill, Platt Bridge and Higher Ince areas of Wigan.

  11. Warrington's unpaid council tax written off

    Warrington Council is writing off almost £800,000 in unpaid council tax.

    The cash was uncollected between 2003 and 2009. 

    The authority is also writing off another £300,000 in other debts. The council says pursuing the money is not "economically viable".      

  12. Lego exhibition to be held at Manchester Central

    A huge two-day Lego exhibition is coming to Manchester this weekend.

    Bricktastic, which is taking place at Manchester Central, will show off creations made by 60 exhibitors across the UK. 

    The designs include a lego Manchester Library and "Brickadilly" station.

    A special military parade was held in St Peter's Square in Manchester to remember 100 years since the Battle of the Somme.

  14. No intention to cause offence, says rally organiser

    Simon Youel, organiser of the Momentum Manchester rally in support of under-pressure Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, said there was "absolutely no intention to cause offence" by scheduling his event on the same day as the Somme centenary commemorations.

    He said the pro-Corbyn rally between 18:00-19:00 in Piccadilly Gardens neither clashed with the national memorial event at Manchester Cathedral this afternoon nor this evening's event in Heaton Park.

    "Richard Leese hasn't approached us directly about this," said Mr Youel. He said the rally's organisers had been contactable via social media.

  15. Council leader calls for postponement of Pro-Corbyn rally

    Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese has emailed his Labour colleagues to say a pro-Jeremy Corbyn rally in the city on the same day as the national commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme is "wholly inappropriate".

    Momentum Manchester organised the Keep Corbyn: Rally for Democracy in the Labour Party for Piccadilly Gardens between 18:00 and 19:00.

    Sir Richard said he had been trying to identify the organisers to ask them to postpone it to a different day "but have been unable to do so".

    Sir Richard warned it could be seen "by many Manchester residents to be highly disrespectful".

  16. Chancellor lays wreath for Somme fallen

    Ahead of a commemoration service at Manchester Cathedral to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Somme, Chancellor George Osborne laid a wealth at the Cenotaph in St Peter's Square to remember the fallen.

  17. Archbishop of York says final prayer for Somme fallen

    Archbishop of York John Sentamu ended the service at Manchester Cathedral with a final prayer.

    "May God grant rest for the departed" in memory of the fallen soldiers of the Battle of the Somme, he said.

  18. 'May we never forget', urges reverend at Somme service

    During the service at Manchester Cathedral, Rt Rev James Newcome paid tribute to those who "faced the terrible waste and devastation" and "fought against all the odds" during the battle of Somme.
