  4. Former Sale rugby star Cipriani 'shocked' over positive drink-drive test

    Rugby star Danny Cipriani was "shocked" when he found out he was over the drink-drive limit following a collision, a court heard.

    The former Sale Sharks player, now with Wasps, had drunk two espresso martinis and a glass of champagne less than an hour earlier, Westminster Magistrates' Court was told.

    The fly-half denies drinking and driving.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of making social media threats to North West MEP Sajjad Karim.

    Mr Karim gave a statement to police on Friday following what he claimed were "direct threats" on Facebook.

    A 55-year-old man was later arrested in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and released on bail.

    Weekend staffing levels affect the care patients receive at a Wigan hospital, an inquest has been told.

    Margaret Gleeson, 70, died on a Sunday at The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan - two days after a routine hernia operation. 

    Bolton Coroner's Court has heard her family ask whether reduced staff at weekends made the hospital "unsafe".

    When questioned about weekend staffing, the trust's Dr Sadasivam Loganathan agreed it was "a major concern".

  10. More than 250 firefighter posts to go

    More than 250 jobs are set to be lost at Greater Manchester Fire Service as part of plans to save about £15m over the next four years.

    It will mean fewer fire engines being available early in the morning, when demand is low. 

    Members of Greater Manchester Fire Authority are expected to approve a 12 hour shift system when they meet later this week.

    Owners of one of the UK's oldest football cups are hoping to solve a 50-year-old mystery a week before the trophy goes on display.

    The lid for the Saturday County Cup - in use since 1880 - went missing sometime between the 1960s and 1980s.

    Now the North Riding FA is trying to find it before the trophy goes on display at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

    Children as young as 11 will be left to walk nearly three miles to school along an "unsafe" disused railway line amid plans to cancel free bus passes.

    Cheshire East Council is to cancel passes for 171 pupils in Bollington, Cheshire, in a move the authority said would "help tackle obesity".

    The council said the route had been approved by road safety officers.
