  3. Warrington town centre's £107m revamp approved

    A £107m development to transform Warrington town centre has been granted planning permission.

    The Bridge Street Quarter includes plans for a new market hall, a 2,000-seat multiplex cinema, a new council office and a public square.

     Demolition of buildings in the Cheshire town's Time Square began last year.

    Warrington Borough Council said work on the scheme, by Muse Developments, is due to be completed in 2019. The development aims to create 400 jobs.

  4. Wigan bus station plans approved

    Plans for a new bus station for Wigan have been approved by Wigan Council.

    Transport for Greater Manchester's proposals include a single, covered concourse building, cycle parking and improved access to the town centre.

    It will be built on the same site as the existing bus station and construction is planned to begin in 2017 and take around 18 months.

  5. Police hunt 'scumbags' over racially aggravated assault

    Police are appealing for information after a 43-year-old man was racially abused and assaulted shortly before 19:00 on Tuesday on a busy road in Ashton-under-Lyne.

    The man was stopped in traffic on Darnton Road by three men in a white van who shouted abuse. Along with a fourth man, they pulled him from his car, punching and kicking him in the face and body before driving away.

    The offenders are described as middle-aged white men, three with brown hair and one bald. Two of them are also described as having “beer bellies”.

    PC Darren Roberts from Greater Manchester Police said the victim was "incredibly shaken up" and asked anyone who may have seen the incident to get in touch "so we can detain and question the scumbags that have done this.”

  6. Samaritans celebrate volunteer's 50 years of service

    One of the Samaritans' longest serving volunteers will finally say goodbye to the organisation after 50 years answering calls for help from people across Greater Manchester. 

    Former teacher Hilary Forest worked at the Manchester and Salford branch and helped form the Stockport branch.  

    She says essentially the work hasn't changed since she started in 1966. The organisation is planning a special dinner next month to mark her half century with the charity.

    An area of rain, sleet and snow will come south-eastwards into the area later on Thursday lasting into Friday morning. Accumulations of 5-10 cm are likely above 200-300 m with locally 2-4 cm to around 100 m. Please be aware of the risk of difficult driving conditions and disruption to transport.

  13. Arrests after Whalley Range high speed crash leaves two dead

    Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after two people were killed in a crash in Manchester.

    The men, aged 20 and 24, died after an Audi travelling at high speed struck two parked cars in Wilbraham Road, Whalley Range, at 03:15 on Tuesday.

    Two males, aged 17 and 19, have been arrested and the 19-year-old remains in hospital under police guard. Greater Manchester Police has referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission because the car was seen by officers before it crashed.

  15. Man charged over Bolton street stabbing

    A man has been charged after a woman was stabbed in the street in Bolton.

    Police were called to Bramley Road on 9 April where they found the woman, believed to be 53, with serious injuries.  

    The 58-year-old, of Foxfold Close, Mosley Common, has been charged with wounding, affray and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon. He will appear at Bolton Magistrates' Court later.
