  3. Woman, 76, seriously injured in suspected carjacking in Oldham

    A 76-year-old woman has been left seriously injured after a suspected carjacking in which she was allegedly run over by her own car.

    Dorothy Cooper got out of her vehicle in a car park off Sandy Lane in Royton, Oldham at about 13:50 BST on Wednesday when she was told there was a problem with it, witnesses told police.

    As she was checking her white Hyundai i10, a man allegedly jumped in and drove over her. A man, 45, has been arrested on suspicion of assault.   

  4. Men charged over £70,000 payphones theft in Manchester

    Two men have been charged after the theft of more than £70,000 from payphones in Manchester, police said.

    The spate of thefts from BT payphones started in April 2015, said Greater Manchester Police.

    Alan Portwood, 37, of Carrfield Avenue, Salford and 38-year-old Paul Knowles, of Broomfield Road, Stockport were charged with conspiracy to defraud and have been bailed to appear at Manchester Crown Court on 6 May.  

  5. Two arrests after shots fired in Manchester

    Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting in Manchester.

    Several shots were fired at a house in Weybridge Road in New Islington, Ancoats on Saturday night. A mother and two young children were inside but no-one was hurt. 

    A 25-year-old and 29-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and were bailed until 1 June pending further inquiries.

  7. Arrest over suspected carjacking in Oldham

    Police have arrested a man in connection a suspected carjacking in Royton.

    A 76-year-old woman was seriously injured in the incident, which happened on Wednesday.

    Police have appealed for witnesses.

  8. Men accused of stealing £70,000 from Manchester payphones

    Two men have been charged after the theft of more than £70,000 from payphones in Manchester, police said.

    The spate of thefts from BT payphones started in April 2015, said Greater Manchester Police.

    Alan Portwood, 37, of Carrfield Avenue, Salford and 38-year-old Paul Knowles, of Broomfield Road, Stockport were held following police searches on 9 April. 

    They were charged with conspiracy to defraud and have been bailed to appear at Manchester Crown Court on 6 May.

    TeamGB Olympic open-water swimmer Keri-Anne Payne launches the 2016 Greater Manchester Swim in Salford Quays.

    The Stockport swimmer finished fourth at London 2012.

  10. Morrissey pays tribute to tea buddy Wood

    Morrissey has paid tribute to Victoria Wood on his semi-official website.

    They may seem an unlikely pairing, but Morrissey was such a fan that he used her comedy as inspiration for his song Rusholme Ruffians.

    Victoria chatted to him for her BBC programme Victoria Wood's Nice Cup of Tea, about his tea obsession, naturally over a cup of ceylon.

    "Tears today for my dear friend Victoria Wood. So unbearable that it cannot be true. I am lost," he said.

  13. Go-ahead for go karting track

    A £1.5m go karting track is to be installed beneath Manchester Arena.

    Planning permission has been granted to build the 550m track in the arena's basement. 

    The people behind the plans - TeamSport Karting Manchester - say it will create 38 full and part-time jobs.
