Woman, 79, carjacked and hit by own car

A 79-year-old woman has suffered serious injuries after she was carjacked and hit by her own car in Oldham.

It happened after 13:50 in a car park off Sandy Lane in Royton. She is being treated in hospital.

The white Hyundai i10 was later found in Buersil Avenue near the Turf Hill area of Rochdale. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Travel: Multi-vehicle crash on M61 southbound

Victoria Wood 'held us enchanted' - Rantzen

Presenter and Childline founder Esther Rantzen are among those who have paid tribute to Victoria Wood, who has died aged 62.

"I think she is one of our greatest comic writers and performers, but she could also deal with serious issues as well, and she's a huge loss." 

"She did a one-woman show for Childline where I felt hugely privileged to interview her and she told the story of her life with such wit. She just held us all enchanted for a whole evening," she said.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk has re-employed his ex-wife Karen as an office assistant after she left last year following the couple's high profile divorce.

A statement from the MP, who is currently suspended from the Labour Party, said she "brings a significant level of knowledge and experience to this vital role."

The family of comedian Victoria Wood who has died aged 62 after "a short but brave" battle with cancer, has asked for "privacy at this very sad time", her publicist said.

Neil Reading said: "The multi Bafta award-winning writer, director, actor and comedian died peacefully at her north London home with family this morning."

Wood has won five Baftas including two for her one-off drama Housewife 49.

Monarch aircraft jobs at risk at Manchester Airport

More than 100 jobs are at risk at Monarch's engineering base at Manchester Airport.

Monarch Aircraft Engineering Ltd, which carries out aircraft repairs and maintenance, is considering closing the facility and relocating elsewhere.

The union Unite said 109 jobs in Manchester, 12 in Luton and two in Birmingham will be axed.

Monarch said the decision is dependent on the outcome of consultation with its Manchester-based employees.

Two boys aged 14 and another aged 15 have pleaded guilty to arson with intent to danger life after a fire at a school in Dukinfield.

Cromwell High School was extensively damaged in the blaze last Friday.

The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted the charge at Tameside Youth Court on Tuesday. They will be sentenced on 10 May.

An online fund was set up after CCTV footage was released of the boy having his £1,000 bike, which was a Bar Mitzvah present, stolen in Bury New Road, Cheetham Hill on Monday.

Salford suffered £2.5m of damage to paths, drains and roads, Bolton sustained £1.33m while Rochdale saw £800,000 worth of damage to allotments and footpaths.
