    Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is unlikely to play for the club again this season, says manager Louis van Gaal.

  7. Footballer given suspended jail sentence for contempt of court in false whiplash claim

    Semi-professional footballer Gary Burnett - who falsely claimed he had suffered whiplash injuries in a road accident - has been given suspended prison sentence.

    The 25-year-old, who played for Northwich Victoria at the time, said he suffered the injury in a crash outside a McDonald's drive-thru in Birkenhead in October 2013.

    But the day after claiming he was injured, he tweeted: "Nice little trek to Kendal later for footy".

    He was given four months, suspended for a year, for being in contempt of court.

    A former teacher at a boys school in Rochdale has been charged with 19 sexual offences against two pupils.

    David Higgins, 76, is accused of committing offences at Knowl View residential school between 1969 and 1970.

  10. Cheshire East Council Supreme court bid over new homes

    Cheshire East Council is going to the supreme court, in a bid to make it more difficult for developers to build new homes in rural areas of the county.

    The council wants more powers over where new housing developments can be built. 

    It follows a decision by the courts to allow more than 100 homes to be built near Nantwich, after local planners refused permission.

  12. Greater Manchester hospitals to take Chorley patients

    Hospitals in Greater Manchester are gearing up for additional pressures on their services over the next few days following the temporary closure of Chorley Hospital's A&E

    Ambulances will be taking patients to Bolton, Wigan, Preston and Blackburn instead.

    A woman who stole more than £200,000 from a relative with dementia has been jailed for three years and four months.

    Krista Pennington, of Derbyshire Avenue, Stretford, was convicted at Manchester Minshull Street Crown court of fraud by abuse of position.

  15. Update: Gas pipe repairs in Rochdale

    National grid has said repairs to a gas substation in Rochdale, which led to an evacuation, should be completed by the end of the day.

    A total of 50 people had to be moved out of their homes on Whitworth Road for several hours last night when a car crashed into the substation, rupturing the pipe.
