  4. Manchester is 'dominant' Northern Powerhouse force, says report

    Manchester is the 'dominant force' in the Northern Powerhouse area, according to new research.

    Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool

    The report - by Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economic and Business Research - is based on estimates of job creation, and the value of goods and services produced by the area.

    It found that at the end of 2015, Greater Manchester's economy slowed but it did grow faster than inner London.    

  5. Commons tribute to firefighter Lee Gaunt

    The Home Secretary has paid tribute to a firefighter who took his own life at Stalybridge Fire Station.

    Lee Gaunt was found hanged at the station last year after struggling to cope with the loss of a colleague Stephen Hunt who died tackling a blaze in the Northern Quarter in 2013.

    Speaking in the Commons, the Labour MP Jonathan Reynolds raised the case to highlight the pressure faced by firefighters.

  8. Police arrest man after dog is stabbed during a burglary

    Police have arrested a man after a dog was stabbed during a burglary in Beswick.

    The pet Shar Pei dog had been repeatedly stabbed by offenders during a burglary at a house on Kylemore Way in Beswick on 19 March, in what Insp Shan Nasim called a "shocking crime" of "extreme violence".  

    A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and although seriously injured, the dog is recovering well.

  10. Football: Kompany out of Man City PSG tie

    Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will not return from injury for his side's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris St-Germain at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

    Manager Manuel Pellegrini said: "He is not 100%. It is not possible."

    Defender Kompany, 30, has not played since suffering a calf injury as City drew 0-0 against Dynamo Kiev in March to reach the last eight.

  11. Royal Bolton Hospital to get new meningitis 'rapid diagnosis' equipment

    Royal Bolton Hospital is to get state-of-the-art equipment which will speed up the diagnosis of meningitis with potentially life-saving results.

    Currently, tests in the lab can take up to seven days depending on the type of infection, but with the new equipment a diagnosis could be made within an hour. 

    Simplyhealth and the charity MedEquip4kids have donated more than £40,000 to pay for the new kit.

    The BBC's Panorama programme tonight will highlight the case of Sara Green who took her own life at the Priory Hospital in Cheadle after eight months in the unit for treatment. She was sent there because of a lack of NHS psychiatric places closer to her home.

  15. Head of Age UK Cheshire highlights problem of ageism

    The head of Age UK Cheshire has said new research, which shows one in four 55 to 64-year-olds have experienced ageism, doesn't surprise him. 

    The results come from a ComRes poll of more than 1,000 people carried out for BBC Radio 5 live in which one in five adults also said they feared getting older. 

    Chief executive of Age UK Cheshire Ken Clemens has said society will have to learn to value older people more.

  16. Bolton Wanderers relegated to League One
