London's evening weather: The fog is coming back

Mist and fog will soon develop again through this evening and it will perhaps be more widespread than the previous night. 

Increasing cloud in western parts may help clear some of the fog here by dawn though.

More police deployed for New Year's Eve patrol

Three thousand police officers will be deployed on the streets of London for the Capital's New Year's Eve celebrations.  

Scotland Yard has confirmed that for the first time concrete blocks will be used to secure the areas where spectators gather for the annual fireworks display on the Thames. 

The increased security comes after last week's terrorist attack in Berlin which killed twelve people at a Christmas market.

Third man charged with inmate's murder

A third man has been charged with murder following the death of a 21-year-old inmate at Pentonville Prison. 

New father Jamal Mahmoud was fatally stabbed at the north London jail during an attack on 18 October in which two other men were also injured.

Joshua Ratner, of no fixed abode, was charged earlier and is due before Highbury Corner magistrates via video-link on 5 January.

Two other men previously charged with murder have been remanded in custody. The co-accused are Basana Kimbembi, 34, and Robert Butler, 30, of no fixed abodes, who must appear at the Old Bailey for a pre-trial hearing on 23 January.

The son of a firefighter from Croydon has rediscovered a letter written during the London bombings of Christmas 1940.

Man arrested in Barking over suspected sexual assault

Officers were called to Ripple Road, Barking at about 08:45 earlier to a report of an alleged sexual assault.

The Met Police said they found a distressed 34-year-old woman who was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Mauricio Pochettino says his Tottenham team are "in a good position" after a 4-1 win at Southampton narrowed the gap to the Premier League's top four.

London commuters support TfL rail devolution plan, poll suggests

After a year of strikes, delays and cancellations, a new poll suggests the majority of Londoners believe Transport for London should have more control of commuter lines into the capital.


A YouGov poll found 58% of respondents wanted TfL to have greater control. The government said it was determined to improve journeys for rail passengers across London and the south-east.

The poll also showed only 14% supported the government's decision to overrule a plan for TfL to take over the services.

Teenager 'knocked off bike and stabbed' in Brixton

A teenager is in a critical condition after he was knocked off his bike by a car then stabbed close to a funfair.

Rushcroft Road

Police believe the 18-year-old was attacked by men who got out of the Ford Focus that hit him shortly before 18:15 GMT on Tuesday in Brixton.

He was found by officers with serious stab wounds in Rushcroft Road, where it meets Windrush Square.

He received medical attention at the scene before he was taken to a south London hospital.

Missing student found safe and well in north London

A university student who was reported missing after failing to turn up at home for Christmas has been found safe and well in north London, the Met Police have said.

Isabel Gayther, 21, had not been seen since about 11:30 GMT on Christmas Eve.

Police said they had "seen and spoken with Isabel and are satisfied that she is safe and well".

There'll be some mist and freezing fog in places to start this morning and it will be slow to clear.

Away from any mist and fog it will be a largely dry and bright day though, with plenty of sunny spells.

Travel: Engineering works affecting Tubes and trains

The Circle line is closed between Aldgate and Gloucester Road for track and drainage replacement work in the Earl's Court area.

The work also means there is no service between Gloucester Road / High Street Kensington and Wimbledon / Kensington Olympia / Richmond / Acton Town on the District line.

There is no service between Romford and Upminster on the Overground due to Crossrail construction work.

Engineering works also mean there is no service between Chadwell Heath and Shenfield on TfL Rail.
