    Sonia Kataria

    BBC News

An extra £5m has been pledged to repair about 1,700 potholes in Leicestershire.

Leicestershire County Council said it has earmarked the cash on top of the £21m budget for highway maintenance because of the "harsh winter".

    Car drives past a pothole

The authority said about 20 road defects appear each week and each piece of preventative work can stop up to 25 potholes forming.

Last year the county council spent £4.6m on patching and restorative works.
