  5. Royal opening for new University of Derby building

    Here's another photo of Prince Edward opening the University of Derby's new engineering and technology building in Markeaton Street earlier.

    The Earl of Wessex was given a tour of the £12m facility and offered culinary treats prepared by catering students from the university.

    His Derbyshire visit also included stops at a holiday retreat for disadvantaged children in Ashbourne and Trent College in Long Eaton.

  6. Glossop halls set for £7m revamp

    Plans have been announced for a multimillion-pound refurbishment of three council-owned buildings in Glossop.

    High Peak Borough Council says it wants to transform the Market Hall, Town Hall and Municipal Buildings to use as "leisure, community and retail space with a particular focus on the culture and creative sector".

    The authority has allocated £2.2m to the project and is applying for a further £4.8m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

    Council leader Tony Ashton said he was "excited" by the plans but acknowledged "there is a long way to go".

  7. Woman injured after gun shot in Mansfield

    A gun was shot in Gladstone Street, Mansfield, in the early hours of this morning.

    A woman was treated for injuries, which were not thought to be life saving, after police were called to a disturbance in a property on the street.

    Insp Nick Butler said: "This is a very concerning matter and as you'd imagine we are treating it very seriously."

    He said the force was "working on the theory that this incident is isolated".

  8. Police name woman found dead at home

    A woman found dead at her home in Fleckney has been named as Jane Hings.

    The 72-year-old was found in her bungalow in Elizabeth Road at about 08:00 on Sunday.

    A post mortem exam has so far failed to identify her cause of death but Leicestershire Police said they were still waiting for the results of more medical and forensic tests.

    A 25-year-old man arrested in connection with her death remains in custody on suspicion of murder.

    Officers also arrested a 15-year-old boy today on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in custody.

  10. Watch: University invents 3D selfie software

    Computer scientists at the University of Nottingham are taking the idea of the selfie literally into the next dimension - as a 3D selfie.

    The university has uploaded the demo version of their software and 400,000 people have already submitted pictures for the treatment.

  11. Siemens to merge with French firm instead of Bombardier

    German train company Siemens has opted to sign a merger deal with french firm Alstom rather than Bombardier.

    Reports some months ago suggested Bombardier, which has a major manufacturing base in Derby, was in "advanced talks" with Siemens over plans to merge - but that's fallen through.

    There's no clear indication the decision will have any effect on Bombardier's Derby operation.

  13. Football: Burton 'shellshocked' in heavy Aston Villa defeat

    Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough says his side looked a "little bit shellshocked" at half-time as they were 3-0 down to Aston Villa by then.

  14. Views wanted on £100m Melton Mowbray road plan

    More people are being urged to give their views on a £100m road project aimed at cutting congestion in Melton Mowbray.

    Leicestershire County Council wants to build a new road, passing around the edge of the town centre, to ease traffic.

    The authority says the proposal is the most ambitious road scheme in its history and would also fit in with plans for more houses and jobs in the town.

    Local residents have until mid-October to take part in the consultation.

  15. Appeal over 'street robbery'

    CCTV images have been released of two boys who police want to speak to in connection with an alleged robbery in Derby.

    An Armani watch was among the items stolen, Derbyshire Police said.

  16. On this day: Foxes pick up first Champions League victory

    It's exactly a year to the day Leicester City picked up their first ever home win in the Champions League, beating Porto 1-0 at the King Power Stadium.
