Rebekah Vardy reveals the 'disgusting' online abuse she has received

Jamie Vardy's wife Rebekah has told ITV's Loose Women about the "horrific" online abuse she has received.

Jamie and Rebekah Vardy

Ms Vardy, who has two children with the sportsman and two from previous relationships, said it was just the "minority" of people who attacked her online but that she had had people wishing her son Finley was stillborn.

The show's host Ruth Langsford asked her what kind of things people would write to her, and she said: "Wishing stillbirth on him, and just really disgusting stuff. It is a minority of people.

"I don't think I'd ever stop reading it, because I think the minute you take yourself away from that, it's the minute the trolls win."

Earlier this week, husband Jamie revealed  he had received "death threats" following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri.

The Leicestershire-based company employs about 1,000 staff in 140 stores and 60 concessions across the UK.

Administrators from PwC, who are now running the business, said redundancies would be "inevitable".

PwC's Tony Barrell said the chain was a victim of changing consumer habits.

He added they would trade normally while they sought a buyer.

Bridgen: Atmosphere at Parliament 'slightly surreal'

North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen has just been speaking about the current lockdown at Parliament.

"As a parliamentarian we know that this is a high risk environment," Mr Bridgen told 96-106 Capital FM.

"It is a clear potential terrorist target for various groups and even knowing that and coming to work and seeing the security it is still a bit numbing when it actually happens.

"It is slightly surreal here in parliament at the moment."

England supporting Vardy over Ranieri 'death threats,' says Southgate

England boss Gareth Southgate has said death threats Jamie Vardy received in the wake of Claudio Ranieri's sacking by Leicester will not affect the striker in tonight's friendly away to Germany.

Gareth Southgate and Jamie Vardy

"I can understand why he [Vardy] wanted to discuss it, it's obviously a very serious subject and we are very supportive of him," said Southgate.

"I know the club [Leicester] and the authorities are well aware of what is going on now as well, which is the most important thing.

"But there will be no problem with his focus for the game, as we have seen with his performances over the last few weeks."

Watchdog probe police over acid attack

Liam Barnes

BBC News Online

Here's more on the report that the IPCC is investigating Leicestershire Police over its handling of a case where a woman poured acid over her sleeping lover.

The force referred itself to the watchdog over claims that it knew the acid was bought by Katie Leong, pictured, with the intent of using it on Daniel Rotariu.

Katie Leong
Leicestershire Police

He suffered horrific injuries after the attack in July last year which left him blind and will need many years of treatment.

Leong was sentenced to a minimum of 17 years in prison yesterday after she was convicted of attempted murder.

Her ex-boyfriend Mark Cummings was cleared of the same charge. Mr Cummings told the court he had raised concerns over the acid with his probation office.

Council trialing 'self service' library in Syston

Tim Parker

BBC Radio Leicester political reporter

Nigel Thomas from Leicestershire County Council has been showing me how the new self-access library trial in Syston has been going.

The self service scheme started this week and is an attempt to keep libraries open longer, without staff being present.

If it works in Syston (and a similar scheme is already up and running in Peterborough) it could be rolled out across all of the county's libraries.

As the 3-month trial has only just started, the council has said it's far too early to say how many staff could be affected if the scheme does get adopted.

IPCC to investigate police's handling of Leicester acid attack

Calum McKenzie

BBC Local Live

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to look at Leicestershire Police's handling of a case where a man had acid poured over him as he slept.

Katie Leong
Leicestershire Police

Katie Leong (pictured), 52, was found guilty on Tuesday of the attempted murder of her boyfriend Daniel Rotariu in an attack in Leicester in July last year.

Jurors cleared Leong's ex-partner, Mark Cummings, of attempted murder.

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: "Although we have started our investigation some aspects of it were put on hold due to the criminal proceedings.

"Now that those proceedings have concluded we will be looking to progress our enquiries to help establish whether the police response to the information received was appropriate and if there is any organisational learning that can be identified."

Fossil named in honour of Sir David Attenborough

Calum McKenzie

BBC Local Live

A team of scientists led by the University of Leicester has discovered a 430 million-year-old fossil and named it after Sir David Attenborough.

The fossil (pictured in a digital scan below) has been determined as a distant relative of living lobsters, shrimps and crabs.

The find comes from volcanic ash deposits that accumulated in Herefordshire.

University of Leicester

The fossil is named Cascolus ravitis in honour of Sir David - who grew up on University College Leicester campus (the forerunner of the University) - in celebration of his 90th birthday.

Professor David Siveter
University of Leicester

Professor David Siveter (pictured above) from the university said: "In my youth, David Attenborough’s early programmes on the BBC, such as ‘Zoo Quest’, greatly encouraged my interest in Natural History and it is a pleasure to honour him in this way."

The word Cascolus is a Latin rendering of the Old English equivalent to Attenborough while Ravitis is a reference to the Roman name for Leicester.
