Your Questions: Is there link between village names starting with 'Th'?

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

Using Your Questions David Finnigan asked: Leicestershire has a lot of villages beginning with the letters "Th" is there a link?

I've compiled a list of towns/villages in the county starting with these letters: Thurmaston, Thrussington, Thurnby, Thornton, Thringstone, Theddingworth, Thurcaston and Thurlaston.

There are also a few with "Thorpe" but I'll get onto them.

Dr Richard Jones from the University of Leicester has said most of these contain Scandinavian personal names, such as Thormothir (Thurmaston) and Thorsteinn (Thrussington).

Most of the place names also have "tun" at the end - Dr Jones said that was Old English for "estate, farm, village".

He doesn't however believe there is any kind of link between the towns.

Thorpe Langton

However, Professor John Martin from De Montfort University said he was pretty sure the "Th" at the start of place names was a variation of the term "thorp" meaning small hamlet or village.

We have a few of those in Leicestershire as well - Thorpe Satchville, Thorpe Astley, Thorpe Arnold Thorpe Langton.

He said it's also quite common at the end of village names - like Countesthorpe.

Watch: Tools stolen from van in Birstall

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

A builder from Birstall has captured thieves on camera stealing £1,000 worth of tools from his van...

The owner is now warning other van owners about thieves getting access to vans using some sort of "device".

This is because the offenders managed to get inside the van without "breaking in".

Police have confirmed they are investigating but so far no arrests have been made.

Church preparing roof for funeral service

BBC Local Live

Yesterday I told you about copper being stolen from the roof of St Peter's Church in Kirby Bellars.

BBC Radio Leicester has been over to see them this afternoon as workmen try to patch the holes with tarpaulin - the church needs to be ready to host a funeral tomorrow.

English Heritage rules mean the church should have to replace the stolen copper but discussions are under way to allow them to use a less valuable material to avoid being a target to thieves again.

BBC Sport

Premier League champions Leicester have held informal talks with former England boss Roy Hodgson about becoming their new manager.

However, it is thought that the 69-year-old was just one potential candidate spoken to in the search for Claudio Ranieri's replacement.

And acting boss Craig Shakespeare could stay in charge until the end of the season if results continue to improve.

The zoo has released a statement saying they hope this will allow the animals to breed, ensuring their long-term survival.

Esha was the last baby elephant to be born at the zoo in 2014 - she was conceived artificially.

To have a male elephant on the site the zoo would need a separate enclosure.

Danny Simpson is backing Craig Shakespeare to become the Leicester City's permanent manager.

He said: "I can't see why not, but it's the chairman's decision. It's up to him and he owns the club, he is passionate about the club. Those decisions are nothing to do with us but, for me, he [Shakespeare] has been really good.

"Since day one he has helped me a lot. He is a top coach, a top guy and he has taken it on naturally. He has kept it simple and told us what he wanted to do, which was simple and basic, and we've done that so let's hope we can carry it on for him.

"The chairman is his own man and he makes his decisions. All we have to do is play football. We know we haven't played how we can - we're first to admit that - but we have to carry on. Leicester carries on."
