As you can imagine though - we're not the only area trying to have our claim to fame.

Over the years there have been quite a few connections made to the inspiration for the popular fictional character.

Did 'Tanky' inspire Sherlock?

Amy Woodfield

BBC Local Live

The potential Leicestershire connection to Sherlock is a man called Francis "Tanky" Smith.

He became Leicestershire Police's first detective in 1840.

The Leicester tour guide Steve Bruce said: "Tanky joined Leicester Police force when it first formed. He rose through the ranks and became quite a celebrated local detective.

"His specialty, and what links him with Sherlock Holmes, is he was a master of disguise going underground and mixing with the criminals."
