  1. Landslip forces five-week Scarborough road closure

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A popular link road near Scarborough will be closed for five weeks in order to repair a landslip, it's been confirmed.

Forge Valley in East Ayton will be shut next month so essential work can be carried out, North Yorkshire County Council says.

The road links the Forge Valley nature reserve with East Ayton and the A170. It is also used by drivers looking to avoid the centre of Scarborough if travelling north.

Diversions will be put in place and access to premises will be maintained.

Highways area manager Richard Marr, says: "This work on the stretch of road at Forge Valley, East Ayton, is to repair a sunken area of carriageway and to carry out maintenance to the drainage.

"This carriageway is prone to slipping due to the frequency of underground springs in the area. The current landslip is adjacent to an area known locally as a birdwatchers’ car park.

"The road is expected to be closed for five weeks from 6 September for these repairs."

  2. Fitness complex approved at Rishi Sunak's Richmond home

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has been granted planning permission for a swimming pool, gym and tennis court at his North Yorkshire home.

    Rishi Sunak

Mr Sunak had applied to develop the complex in a paddock at Kirby Sigston Manor, near Northallerton.

The Grade II-listed house, built in 1826, is in the MP's Richmond constituency.

Hambleton District Council's planning committee approved the plan, despite some concerns over its appearance.

Members of the committee had visited the chancellor's large gardens to assess the proposals.

These include changing the use of agricultural land, constructing a stone building and outdoor tennis court, and creating a wildlife area.

Officers told the committee the usual policy was to only support development in Kirby Sigston in exceptional cases.

However, they said developments in residential properties were common where they posed no harm to the character of the countryside.

The proposed L-shaped single storey building, close to the Grade I-listed 12th century St Lawrence's Church, had been designed to have a minimal impact on the historic buildings and landscape, the meeting heard.

Mr Sunak, who was not mentioned by name at the meeting, has lived in the house since before he became the local MP in 2015.

  3. South Yorkshire head stresses importance of pupil testing

    PA Media

An executive head of three schools in South Yorkshire has urged parents to encourage their children to get tested regularly for Covid-19 to enable greater "freedoms" and reduce disruption.

    A Covid-19 lateral flow test

Andrew Truby, who runs two primary schools in Sheffield and one in Rotherham, acknowledged that teenagers are likely to be "fed up" with taking Covid tests, but stressed it would help to stop coronavirus spreading and minimise disruption to the upcoming school term.

Mr Truby said: "It's not pleasant, but they've been used to doing it and continuing to keep that will really help especially as we go into the autumn."

Department for Education guidance states that secondary school and college pupils in England should be tested twice on-site on their return, with lateral flow tests carried out between three and five days apart.

Pupils should then continue to test twice weekly at home until the end of September, when the policy will be reviewed.

  4. Man remanded in custody on York kidnapping charge

A man has appeared in court charged with kidnap after a woman was found in a vehicle in Leeds.

    York Magistrates' Court

North Yorkshire Police said officers were called to a disturbance in the Tang Hall area of York early on Thursday, with a search then commencing for a woman.

She was later found in Leeds and is now safe, the force said.

Marcus Green, 31, who is also charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance, was remanded in custody at York Magistrates' Court (pictured).

Mr Green, of Grey Friars, Chester, is due to appear at York Crown Court on 23 September.

  5. Record year for North Yorkshire mountain rescue team

Members of a North Yorkshire mountain rescue team say they've had the busiest ever year since the organisation was formed in 1965.

    Landrover ambulance

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue (SAR) says two calls on Monday took the total to 80 operations already this year.

Members of the team helped an ambulance crew to carry a casualty with an ankle injury along a narrow canal path south of Driffield.

They were also asked to help a 70-year-old man who had fallen near Scarborough, but were stood down as help was no longer needed.

The SAR team, which has about 50 members, all of whom are volunteers, covers the eastern half of the North York Moors, Scarborough, Ryedale and York.

It has a base in Snainton, near Scarborough, housing two Land Rover ambulances and other equipment.
