Mr O-Mara said he felt he'd been treated like a criminal during the suspension and resigned on Thursday, saying: "The Labour Party no longer shares my commitment to the true definition of equality and compassion."

Labour's John Mann, MP for Bassetlaw, said: "If Jared O'Mara wants to remain as MP for Sheffield Hallam the best thing he could do is resign so he can stand as an independent.

    A65 Ingleton

The incident, on the A65 between Clapham and Ingleton on Friday, led to a police pursuit which ended in a second crash and the closure of a railway line.

Police say the converted truck hit a Peugeot car coming the other way.

A passenger in the car, a 28-year-old man, died at the scene.

Officers say a decomissioned ambulance was in convoy with the campervan and used its blue lights during its journey towards Skipton.

It left the accident scene leading to a pursuit.
