Goodnight!

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Thanks for following the live blog tonight. That was ruthless from Leeds. The term '1-0 battering' will come up a lot tonight, but is apt for a game in which a strong Derby side never found a real foothold.

We'll be back on Saturday 21st January, when Leeds go to Barnsley.

In the meantime, enjoy your weekend.

CHRIS WOOD: We can take on anybody

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Chris Wood
PA

We had a number of half chances and could have been three up, but we did well to go in at half time 1-0 up and we took confidence from that.

You just have to keep going and going, and it will come - Kyle Bartley had a few chances, and he told me for the goal, "I'll go back post, you go front." He was gutted, but still...

We always have a game plan - it wasn't a case of sitting off, but working them into a trap. We stick to the plan no matter what because that's what's got us success so far. The gaffer has done a fantastic job and we're playing well, ticking along nicely - we know who we are, know our jobs and responsibilities and we don't care if anyone else thinks it's bad.

We have a long way to go and we'll just keep ticking along as we are. We had great quality last year but we've added to it superbly and we are working like one of the best sides in the league. We can take on anybody and we know that.

A very special spirit at Leeds

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Sometimes, big names at clubs can't compete with togetherness. This group have a trust in each other and will fight for each other - players are growing in their shirts and loving their time here.

That performance - the aggression, the pressing... The fans knew the players need help. When you hear them, you get a surge of energy about you and get stuck in.

Lewie Coyle outstanding

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Take Lewie Coyle - we knew he was a good player, but he's dedicated to himself, his career and Leeds United. He's been out a long time but he's a fit boy. You looked at how he got forward and the decisions he was making - he didn't dive in, stopped in the one-on-one and showed he's mastered the art of defending.

You can't dive in - you have to be disciplined, not sell yourself early. What he's got - you expect that from someone in their thirties.

Best Leeds display for years

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Gareth Jones

BBC West Yorkshire Sport

We've watched Leeds for many, many years, and I can't think of many 90 minute performances that have been better than that. I think you'd have to go right back to the Simon Grayson team chasing the play offs.

Managers always want more

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

I think as a manager, you're always striving for more from your players. But he'll go home tonight a proud man, proud to manage this football club.

GARRY MONK: I trust all these players

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Garry Monk
PA

We had a stranglehold on them and did wonder if we'd get the goal. I spoke to the players at half time about Derby coming - but we were physical and strong. We're still yet to have that complete performance I'm looking for, but it will come and that was close. It's hard to sum it up because I'm very proud of what we did tonight.

I didn't even notice Derby or Steve McClaren - I was fixated on my team, on those values and on how hard we were working. I'm pessimistic as always until that whistle goes - I know you can dominate games and get stung right at the end. Our performance from start to finish was a team effort, and everything we've been working on came out tonight.

That first 45 minutes has to be the standard we hold there. I trust all these players. They look after each other and I look after them, as well. There is a real good spirit and togetherness. I said at the very start that it will take all of that for the club to be successful.

GARRY MONK: I am really proud

Leeds 1-0 Derby

I stand here really proud of that team tonight. There was a lot of talk before about where we are in the league, but I wanted them to show tonight the values we hold really dear - the principles, what we work for day in, day out. That was the challenge. What we want to be, what we can be - it came out in spades tonight.

Leeds win well deserved

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Every player is playing for the manager and it shows how much they're enjoying working with him. Everybody showed what they're about tonight and Vieira was unbelievable - he picked up every second ball, won chances and drove past people.

The timing of the goal was massive, just before half time - Leeds had had all the pressure, all the ball, all game. It was coming and it would have been an injustice if they hadn't gone in winning 1-0. Wood showed great concentration to go in for the ball and win the header, but the delivery was so good.

Ronaldo Vieira key tonight

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Adam Pope

BBC West Yorkshire Sport

I've just been chatting to some of the journalists down here and saying Ronaldo Vieira was unbelievable. Will Hughes looks a shadow compared to Vieira - I'd go as far to say that, at times. Vieira has looked better than Lewis Cook. A few balls went awry but that comes with being young.

How did Leeds stay composed?

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

I think it's down to experienced heads when you're out there - the Bridcutts and Hernandezes are calming influences on the players around them. The players are so confident in their abilities and did not allow Derby a sniff. Monk's players always seemed to know what they wanted to do.

Leeds showed a different type of character

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Gareth Jones

BBC West Yorkshire Sport

We saw a different kind of character today - a right back playing at centre back, for example - but everyone seemed to know they couldn't have an off-day. We've seen Leeds come from behind but this was a real team performance where the odds were stacked before the game given how many men they were missing. It's a team - nay, a club - performance. It really is 25,000 people of the match.

Doukara is peaking

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Some of the passing on display - the pressing, the movement... This was a 1-0 battering. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a game this much.

You have to beat the teams in and around you, as well, as these are the games that are going to determine how well you finish.

That kind of performance has been coming for a while - some of the Derby players were twisted inside out by Doukara, Hernandez and Roofe. We must be seeing the best of Doukara right now because I've never seen him so fit, so hungry and so tricky.

'Anything is possible'

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Adam Pope

BBC West Yorkshire Sport

Derby probably fancied themselves tonight as Leeds were struggling at the back - but Leeds have taken this game and really gone at Derby, shown that they mean business. The statement tonight? Anything is possible.

A unique time for Leeds

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Adam Pope

BBC West Yorkshire Sport

Look at the response in the stands - we're only halfway through a season and what a season we could be talking about. Leeds go third and look at the connection between the fans, the players, the club, the city. This is unique. Watch out, Newcastle. Watch out, Brighton. The White Tide is coming.

BreakingFULL TIME: LEEDS UNITED 1-0 DERBY COUNTY

All the reaction to come.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Leeds are still piling on the pressure here - mad, mad stuff in Derby's penalty area.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Berardi heads away and Vieira picks up, finding Wood with the ball over the top. Wood anticipates it well and brings it down, but can't quite feed it to Mowatt as Derby clear. Mowatt finds himself with the ball again moments later, but just slips as it rolls away.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Leeds can smell the victory and are working so hard to see this over the line. Vieira picks up on halfway but he plays it just behind Dallas - Dallas probably wanted it in front of him as he runs around the defender. That was a bit mixed but Leeds have won it back and Coyle is dancing all the way to the corner flag as he wins a corner. He has so much energy, even at this stage. When he crosses into their territory, he's just as much an attacker as a defender.

BreakingFOUR ADDED MINUTES

BreakingRED CARD - BRADLEY JOHNSON

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Doukara is showing excellent feet but can't find Dallas - but Derby hand it back to Berardi on the left wing. Dallas must take Johnson on down the left - but the Derby man is too wild as he lunges in and gets his second yellow.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

You can see the response from the bench as Hernandez comes off - everyone is a part of this. Mowatt has already shown good vision in the number ten role, knocking the ball out to Coyle.

BreakingLEEDS UNITED SUB: PABLO HERNANDEZ OFF, ALEX MOWATT ON

The ball bounces through to Ince and he can't keep it - Leeds have a throw and they make the sub,

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Bartley steps in to clear as Derby step it up a gear - first spell of pressure they've exerted in a while. Rob Green rises to meet a Derby ball as Leeds prepare to bring Alex Mowatt on...

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Was the assistant who flagged up for that, not the referee, if that explains anything.

BreakingYELLOW - TOM INCE

Leeds 1-0 Derby

BreakingLEEDS UNITED SUB: KEMAR ROOFE OFF, STUART DALLAS ON

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Roofe gets a shot just wide after some contortionist work in the box - and comes off straight after.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Doukara breaks down the right wing and prods it across to Kemar Roofe. Baird clears but Hernandez wriggles forward, clipping the ball to the penalty spot from the left of the area as Derby's defence are at sixes and sevens. Vieira does well to shoot from distance and the rebound falls to Hernandez, whose shot is powerful but falls just wide.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

A poor ball from Johnson that Roofe will pick up in the centre circle. He's on his own and Derby clear, but Vieira is there to pick it up, as per.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

Noel Whelan

Ex-Leeds United striker

Vieira has been so good today, he must have quite a few people in his pocket. They must be deep pockets.

BreakingYELLOW - BAIRD

Chris Baird goes into the book for a foul on Kemar Roofe as Roofe looks to roll the ball past the Derby man.

Leeds 1-0 Derby

As it stands, Leeds are third... They keep Derby penned into their own half.
