  1. Goodnight!

Thanks for joining us on the live blog tonight. Leeds weren't embarrassed today but equally Newcastle were a cut above - no team in the Championship would have withstood that second goal and you sense they still had another few gears to go through.

We'll be back next Saturday as Leeds visit Rotherham that evening.

  2. Can't undersell the importance of Shelvey

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Noel Whelan

    Ex-Leeds United striker

The positions Shelvey took up today - our players wouldn't have known whether to mark them or to stay. Those kinds of players see things quicker than other players and can catch teams off guard.

Even though we weren't at our best, we would have got something from that game against a team other than Newcastle. Sometimes, the only way you can learn is by playing teams like these.

You look at the wage structure and the prices they pay for players - they can spend millions and it doesn't make a dent.

  3. GARRY MONK: We'll have to bounce back

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

It was an honest mistake from Rob Green. It happens, but I thought we reacted well. We deserved a goal, and one going in would have changed the shade of the game. Good teams react, and that's what I've said to the boys.

We will have to make changes for next week but we need perspective as well. We're competing, the spirit is there - there'll be days where we don't quite get the result but the commitment was there to see.

We have to be careful not to rush Pablo and it looks unlikely he'll be back for even another ten weeks.

The players are very disappointed because of the environment we've created, but we're in a good way and have to bounce back.

  4. GARRY MONK: Critical moments key today

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

We just fell the wrong side of those critical moments today. We reacted well in the last 15 minutes of that first half and kept them penned in at times.

For me, it was a definite penalty, and that would have changed the whole dynamic of the game.

I think it's difficult to say if we could have been more aggressive. It's alright saying we'll go gung-ho but they're a footballing team. All in all, we were very competitive again - we didn't look out of place. We're not talking about massive margins.

I felt their second goal was where we saw their real quality. Our players can learn a lot from today but ultimately I'm pleased with what they're doing.

  5. Not that much wrong with Leeds

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Adam Pope

    BBC West Yorkshire Sport

There's not that much wrong with Leeds United - they've just set themselves a level of expectation that they didn't meet today. Hoping to speak Garry Monk within the next few minutes.

  6. How do you combat Shelvey?

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Noel Whelan

    Ex-Leeds United striker

Phillips has played a position Hernandez would usually do. He's up against Shelvey, Colback, then Clark running in, Lascelles - he's been up against real quality who are always going to hurt players with their range of passing.

The only way to combat that is man-marking, but you both lose a player then and it becomes nine v nine. 2-0 is not a complete embarrassment against these.

We were a bit sloppy all over the pitch, just not sharp enough, and everyone is guilty of that.

  7. Newcastle will be up there

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Noel Whelan

    Ex-Leeds United striker

I think Newcastle bought well over the summer to compete in this Championship. It shows the strength they have financially and they've not lost that many players either since they've dropped down.

I think it's never easy for a referee and we can't blame him for the result - the result came down to a mistake, ball watching and a bit of quality.

  8. Rob Green deserves to keep his place

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Noel Whelan

    Ex-Leeds United striker

Rob Green's done well and he's not done a great deal wrong to lose his place. Hindsight's a wonderful thing and it's easy to talk about bringing in Silvestri now. Today, all over the field, we were a half yard slower than Newcastle.

But what has Rob Green actually had to do? One save? I can't remember him having to make save after save today.

  9. 'We didn't have enough quality in the final third'

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Noel Whelan

    Ex-Leeds United striker

We should have man-marked Shelvey - made him play backwards.

It was Green's mistake that condemned Leeds and he should have taken it more sensibly - there was no pressure on him at all but he made it into a situation. It should have been bread and butter but he took his eye off the ball. It was a gift of a goal for Gayle.

But generally, Leeds weren't quick enough or sharp enough to even manufacture a point out of the game. We didn't have enough quality to hurt Newcastle.

  10. 'Leeds should have been more aggressive'

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Noel Whelan

    Ex-Leeds United striker

Should we have man-marked Shelvey? We could have done so much more and been aggressive, got into their heads and hurt them. There had  to be a way to take him out of the game, and they never really did that. Him and Colback ran the show.

Shelvey dictated the play, dropped into areas, kept taking the ball, and that blocked Leeds into their own half. That was the difference.

I think it's important that the next game has to be a win to keep in this pack. I think this was the kind of one that you could take out of the equation from the beginning but we want to be in there come the end of the season.

  11. Newcastle will be Premier League

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Trevor Sinclair

    Former England winger on 5Live

Very, very solid performance from the Magpies. They dominated from the first to the last whistle.

Leeds didn't play badly - there were a few moments where they showed real promise but Newcastle are just at a much higher level.

I have a deep rooted suspicion Newcastle United will be playing in the Premier League next August.

  12. 'Leeds never had a go'

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

The views of Mick Lowes, the BBC Newcastle commentator:

"For all the build-up, the thing I don't understand is that here, in front of this crowd - it didn't feel like Leeds had a go.

"That's eight wins on the bounce for Newcastle now - they're now looking at Kevin Keegan's 11-win run in 92/93."

  13. 'Leeds were just a poor side'

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    John Anderson

Former Newcastle defender on BBC Newcastle

Leeds didn't have anything - they were just a poor side. Same old, same old for Newcastle - they're going to win the league and it could be all over pretty soon. Leeds didn't have a standout player and you want to see Newcastle tested. We haven't seen that yet - there hasn't been anyone who's tested us.

  14. BreakingFULL TIME: LEEDS UNITED 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

Leeds United fall here and come up short against a top class Newcastle side. Newcastle march on atop the Championship table while Leeds fall to their first league defeat in four. Stay with us for all the reaction from both sides.

  15. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Noel Whelan

    Ex-Leeds United striker

Leeds have been up against a different kind of team today and a different class of player. They ballwatched for the second and the first will be the easiest goal Gayle will ever score. They're poor goals to concede for Leeds.

I think we've been too nice to Shelvey, let him have too much time on the ball. We've only really rattled him in a tackle once.

  16. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

    Trevor Sinclair

    Former England winger on 5Live

This win has been as convincing as it gets.

Leeds have had a few unlucky moments - Robert Green being one of them - but Newcastle fully deserve the three points when the final whistle goes.

  17. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Roofe comes in off the left wing and finds Charlie Taylor, but it's a poor cross - just stabbed straight out of play. Story of the day for Leeds.

  18. BreakingTHREE ADDITIONAL MINUTES

  19. Post update

    Leeds 0-2 Newcastle

Rob Green takes a free kick from deep inside his own half. A point would have been enough to take Leeds back into the play offs, but looking unlikely now. Wood chases down a long ball there and gets the ricochet, but it's out for a goal kick as it cannons away.
