Watch: MP invites Jeremy Hunt to see why Huddersfield A&E should remain

Hospital bosses for Huddersfield and Halifax have voted in favour of demolishing Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and building a new hospital without an A&E department.

The local NHS has always maintained that without change services will become unsafe and without change the Trust will face an underlying deficit of £27.5m. However a public consultation found that 80% of people in Huddersfield thought they'd be negatively affected.

Paula Sherriff is the MP for Dewsbury and Mirfield, she has called on the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to come to West Yorkshire to see why there's a need for two A&E departments in the area.

Facelift in pipeline for Halifax railway station

This weeks seems to be all about revamps to railway stations. On Tuesday we heard that Leeds Station is to get a facelift from the people that did Kings Cross.

Today, Calderdale Council is expected to give the go-ahead to a feasibility study for a facelift on Halifax's railway station.

A proposal to close Huddersfield's A&E department moves a step closer after health groups vote unanimously in favour of pushing the plan forward.

Huddersfield A&E closure plans: Decision met with anger

The vote to move forward with plans to close Huddersfield's A&E department has been met with anger by people campaigning to save it.

The Greater Huddersfield and Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) met in the town to vote on the Right Care Right Time Right Place proposal.

Both CCG groups voted unanimously to approve the recommendations with no abstentions. Emotions  were running high after the vote.

The conservative MP for the Colne Valley, Jason McCartney has said he was "appalled" by the vote.

Plans to close Huddersfield A&E a step closer

The A&E department at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary has moved a step closer to being closed as health groups voted unanimously in favour of pushing the plan forward.

The plan would see all emergency acute and high-risk planned care moved to Halifax's Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Analysis - Jamie Coulson, BBC Look North Health correspondent

There are very few things as controversial and emotive as plans to radically change local hospital services. The proposals to re-locate all urgent and emergency care from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to Calderdale Royal Hospital have been no different.

Thousands of people have already marched through the streets of Huddersfield and more than 130-thousand people signed a petition that was delivered to Downing Street.

The leaders of the local NHS in Greater Huddersfield and Calderdale have always maintained that what they're proposing is the best option in terms of patient care and affordability.

However, their plans have been fiercely criticised by campaigners, local MPs and many front line GPs, who've raised questions about safety and cost.

Wakefield fire murders: Police on how it happened

Police investigating the death of a man and his daughter who died in a house fire in Wakefield say it may have begun after something was put through the letter box of their home.

Andrew Broadhead, 42, initially escaped the blaze with his wife and teenage daughter, but went back into their burning house to try to save eight-year-old Kiera.

Police have launched a double murder inquiry as they believe that someone started the fire deliberately.

The fire took hold yesterday morning just after 04:00. His wife and eldest daughter were taken to hospital but have since been discharged.

The seat of the fire appears to have been by the front door and we are investigating the possibility that an accelerant was poured through the letter box. We know that this fire took hold extremely quickly and it is possible that the person who set this fire was themselves burned in doing so."

Health bosses want to build a new hospital without an emergency department but that would mean people in Huddersfield would have to travel to Halifax for emergency care.

A final decision on the site is due this afternoon.

Family doctors in and around Huddersfield have refused to endorse the plans for change.

Patients and the people of Huddersfield have understandable concerns that some of their more basic services may be downgraded as well as part of this reconfiguration plan. That's why GPs in the area have raised concerns about this process and have not been able to support the plans as they're currently outlined."
