  2. 'Northern poorhouse' warning as Npower announces big job cuts

The scale of job cuts announced by Npower earlier could help to create a "northern poorhouse", unions have said.

    Npower sign

The energy firm earlier confirmed it is to lose 2,400 jobs in the UK by 2018.

It has several bases in northern England, with 1,200 staff employed at two sites in Leeds, one of which is earmarked for closure by the end of 2017.

Tom Allison, regional organiser for the GMB union, said "We have a chancellor whose mantra is the Northern Powerhouse, I suggest the scale of these job cuts, if they do materialise in our region, this could be a northern poorhouse."

We've got one lane closed, causing long delays on A58 Wellington Road eastbound in Leeds between Armley Gyratory and the A58(M) Inner Ring Road junction.

It's all down to emergency repairs and a collapsed manhole. Congestion on M621 to J2, A643 (Elland Road).

The latest headlines in West Yorkshire tonight include:

  7. Yorkshire amongst heaviest alcohol-consuming areas

Around 2.5 million people in Great Britain, 9% of drinkers, consume more than the new weekly recommended limit for alcohol in a single day, and those in Yorkshire are among the worst offenders.

The 2014 data predates the new limit of 14 units of alcohol per week for men which began in January.

Although habits may start to change, experts say the figures are concerning.

The chief medical officer says there is no safe level of regular drinking.
