  11. Rail franchise announcement 'bitter blow' for rail staff

Today's rail franchise announcements by the government will mean job cuts and risk passenger and staff safety, warns the RMT rail union.

    RMT activists

Arriva Rail has been handed the Northern franchise covering the majority of local services in West Yorkshire while First will continue to run TransPennine Express services connecting West Yorkshire to the north-west of England.

Mick Cash, the RMT general secretary, believes the announcement is bad news for rail staff and rail users:

Quote Message: This widely-trailed announcement is no surprise but will still come as a bitter blow to rail users and rail staff across the North. Rather than all the garbage about the Northern Powerhouse, this morning's announcement opens the door to years of cuts to staff and safety and to profiteering on an epic scale." from Mick Cash RMT General Secretary
