Police reviewing Ripper-linked cases

Police have confirmed they are reviewing historical unsolved cases linked to the Yorkshire Ripper

The Sun  newspaper has claimed that Peter Sutcliffe, who now calls himself Peter Coonan, has been interviewed in prison about 17 unsolved attacks.

Sutcliffe was given 20 life terms in 1981 for murdering 13 women and attempting to kill seven more.

Two of the victims - Jean Jordan, 21, and 41-year-old Vera Millward - were from Manchester.

He was  moved to Frankland Prison in Durham in August  after a health tribunal ruled he no longer required treatment for any mental disorder.  

Rugby League: Salford owner wants Super League salary cap increase

Salford Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash has reiterated his desire for Super League to increase the salary cap .

Currently, clubs in England's top flight can spend £1.85m on their squad, with another £175,000 allowed for a marquee player outside of that.

Koukash called from an increase in the cap in 2013 when he bought Salford and hopes to discuss the matter at a Super League meeting this week.

Shots fired at car in Litherland

Shots were fired at an empty car in Litherland on Sunday evening, Merseyside Police said.

Officers were called to the Kirkstone Road North area at about 21:55 following reports of gunshots.

A police spokesman said they found a Toyota car that had "damage consistent with a firearms discharge". 

The spokesman added that nobody was in the car at the time and initial inquiries "have not identified anyone that was injured as a result of this incident".

Questioning continues after man and woman bitten by dogs in Bolton

A man is still being questioned after a man and woman were bitten by two pit-bull type dogs.

Armed officers were called to Queen's Park on Sunday morning after reports six dogs were dangerously out of control. They shot two of them. 

A man, 38, was arrested on suspicion of affray and allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in public.  

He remains in police custody.

Murder charge over house fire death

A man has been charged with murder over the death of a 47-year-old man whose body was found following a Salford house fire .

Berry Street in Clifton

Firefighters found Thomas Jones inside a property in Berry Street, Clifton, at about 12:30 on 22 March.

A post-mortem examination concluded he died from multiple stab wounds, police said.

Alan Maidment, 40, of Ludlow Avenue, Salford, is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court later.

Police said a 37-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man who were arrested on suspicion of murder will face no further action.

Hameed's hand injury not serious

England opener Haseeb Hameed did not suffer serious damage after having to retire hurt with a hand injury while playing for Lancashire.

The 20-year-old was struck after facing only 23 balls against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner's on Sunday.

It was his first innings since undergoing sinus surgery.

"Haseeb has been reviewed by the club's hand specialist this morning and scans have cleared him of any bone damage," said a statement by Lancashire.

"He will be assessed over the coming days."

Three teenagers bailed over St Helens stabbing

Three more teenagers have been released on bail after a 14-year-old boy was stabbed in the street in St Helens. 

The victim remains in a stable condition in hospital following the attack on Parr Stocks Road on Friday night. 

Another 17-year-old boy arrested was bailed over the weekend.

Sir Howard was 17 when he walked in to Manchester Town Hall to start his first job as a junior clerk. His first task? Pot washing.

The boy from Cheetham Hill would walk out 46 years later credited with transforming the city.

"Ever since I was a boy I knew I wanted to make a difference to the people of Manchester", he said.

For many people, moving on from a childhood spent in care can be hard.

As some councils in England offer council tax relief to ease the transition for adult care leavers, BBC reporter Ashley John-Baptiste  asks what difference it might make .

Seven councils told care leavers this month they do not have to pay council tax until they are 22 or, in some cases, 25.

They have joined four authorities, including one in Cheshire, that already have a similar policy in place.

Cheshire East Council, which has approximately 240 care leavers, says the cost to the council will be approximately £17,000 every year.

'Most wanted' child sex offender jailed

A man who went on the run for nearly three years and became one of Britain's most wanted fugitives has been jailed.

Stephen Carruthers, from Bury, fled the UK but was later arrested when he was admitted to a French hospital following a car crash.

The 43-year-old, of no fixed address, was convicted of 29 child sex charges, including 21 counts of making indecent images of children.

He was jailed for three years and eight months at Carlisle Crown Court.

Fire breaks out at city centre cafe

A fire has broken out at a city centre cafe  in Lancaster.

About 50 firefighters have been dealing with the blaze at Amy's Tea Shop in Mary Street since about 12:40.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the flames are being fanned by high winds. No injuries have been reported.

It is not yet known whether the fire has spread to neighbouring shops. One witness said nearby buildings have been evacuated.

Cancer surgeon says patient notes went 'missing'

A breast cancer surgeon accused of carrying out unnecessary operations has  told a jury that patient notes had "gone missing" .

Ian Paterson, of Altrincham, denied accusations that he did not make notes and also said the lack of records was "frustrating".

Mr Paterson, 59, is on trial at Nottingham Crown Court and denies 20 counts of wounding with intent.

The procedures relate to nine women and one man and were carried out between 1997 and 2011.

Biker, 30, dies in crash

A motorcyclist has died after a crash with a car in Cheshire.

Welsh Road, Childer Thornton,

The 30-year-old man, from Birkenhead, was injured in Welsh Road, Childer Thornton, near Ellesmere Port at about 13:00 on Sunday. 

He was pronounced dead at Arrow Park Hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

North West least active region in UK

Physical inactivity levels in the North West are the highest in the UK, figures from the British Heart Foundation show .


The statistics show 47%, or 2.7 million adults, are insufficiently active. 

More than 20 million people in the UK are physically inactive, with the charity warning that inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and costs the NHS around £1.2bn each year.

Three teenagers are being questioned by Merseyside Police over the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in St Helens.

Three Manchester City players will make their tournament debuts for England Women at this summer's Euro 2017 .

Defender Demi Stokes, midfielder Isobel Christiansen and striker Nikita Parris have all been named in head coach Mark Sampson's 23-strong squad. 

Liverpool's Alex Greenwood is also included, despite currently being out with a long-term injury.

Man charged after woman, 75, hit by car

A man has been charged after a 75-year-old woman who was hit by a car was left in life-threatening condition.

The woman was struck shortly after 21:30 on Friday in Manchester New Road in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

She was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.

A 39-year-old man, from Blackley, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Liverpool to pay tribute to Hillsborough victims at Bournemouth game

Liverpool will pay tribute to the 96 supporters who died as a result of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster during this week's game against Bournemouth at Anfield

One minute's applause will take place before kick-off on 15 April, and fans on the Kop will reveal a commemorative mosaic.

Players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect and tributes will be displayed on LED boards surrounding the pitch. There will also be a commemorative edition of the matchday programme.

The club is looking for volunteers to help lay out the mosaic and asked people interested  to get in touch .  

There will be no Hillsborough memorial service at Anfield this year, after the Hillsborough Family Support Group, decided the 2016 service would be the final one to be held at the stadium.

Entertainer dies day after 81st birthday

Former entertainer and theatre producer Duggie Chapman has died , aged 81.

One of Lancashire's showbusiness veterans, Chapman produced stage shows for more than 50 years and made more than 100 appearances on the BBC.

Born in Burnley, he began his career with an appearance in a feature film aged 11 and was awarded an MBE in 2009 for services to light entertainment.

His partner, Beryl Johnson, said "showbusiness was Duggie's life" and he "will be sorely missed".

She said he died at about 06:00 on Saturday - a day after his birthday.  

Attempted rape arrest after woman attacked

A man has been arrested after a woman was sexually assaulted in Merseyside.

A woman was attacked in bushes near to Oak Lane on the side of Croxteth Country Park at about 19:50 on Thursday.

A 39-year-old man, from Huyton, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape.

He is in police custody for questioning.
