Anti-fracking protest compared to 'football hooliganism'

The head of the energy company Cuadrilla says there will be no change to its operations on the Fylde despite a big protest in Little Plumpton at the weekend .

Fracking protest

About 35 anti-fracking activists pushed over fences as part of a protest at the site on Preston New Road which was attended by about 250 people.

Cuadrilla's chief executive Francis Egan said the protest compared to the "dark days of football hooliganism".

Lancashire Police has launched an investigation into the incident.

We won't be doing anything differently. Our workers at the site have a right to go about their work. We've seen intimidation and bullying online and in presence of local Lancashire companies and it's completely unacceptable.

Hyndburn has region's lowest recycling rate

Hyndburn has the lowest recycling rate in the north-west of England at 28%, according to figures obtained by the BBC .

Rates across the region are either dropping or staying the same, says Keep Britain Tidy, with campaigners blaming council schemes for being too confusing.

The average for England stands at 43.9%, but KBT says that at least 300 different recycling systems are in use.

The figures also showed that Hyndburn was not alone in missing targets: every district in the county except Wyre and Fylde also failed to meet the requirements.

The council says it's bringing in a new system to tackle the problem:

We're going to go for two extra wheelie bins to each property... It'll be quite straightforward and we're going to collect those every week.

Paul Cox Deputy Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council
