  3. Body of soldier killed 'in shooting accident' repatriated

    The body of L/Cpl Scott Hetherington who is understood to have died in an accidental shooting in Iraq has been returned to the UK.

    L/Cpl Hetherington, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, served with the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Lancaster's Regiment which is based at Weeton Barracks.

  5. Gritters out in force across Lancashire roads

    With further sleet and snow showers forecast, Lancashire County Council has been busy gritting priority routes across the county.

    Gritters were out in the east, central and south Lancashire this afternoon and Lancaster Wyre and Fylde will treated tonight.

    Cllr Roy Davies is calling for surveillance cameras to be set up around Olive Lane play park as a deterrent for teenagers who have been causing damage to the park’s facilities.

    All lanes have been reopened on the M58 between junction 3 (Bickerstaffe) and junction 4 (Skelmersdale) after an earlier accident.

  9. National flu vaccination target achieved by staff in Lancashire hospitals

    The Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust has achieved the national target for this winter's 'flu fighter' campaign.

    Royal Preston Hospital

    More than 75% of staff at the Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley Hospital have been vaccinated against influenza.

    The target is set nationally by NHS England as part of their winter flu vaccination programme.

  10. Grant given to restore Fleetwood Pavillion and Gardens

    Wyre Council has received support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to continue restoring the Mount Pavilion and Gardens in Fleetwood.

    Funding of almost £150,000 has been awarded to help the council develop a proposal to change one of the sides of the Grade II listed building and gardens to its original Victorian landscape. 

    The side that faces the sea was restored recently due to a £1m personal donation from Doreen Lofthouse.

  11. Slavery trial adjourns after juror collapses

    The trial of a father and son charged with modern slavery offences has been adjourned after a juror collapsed.

    Jurors have been sitting in the case of Mohammed Riaz, 62, and his son Khuram, 27, at Burnley Crown Court when one was taken ill.

    The jury member was taken to hospital by ambulance earlier. The trial is due to continue at Burnley Crown Court from 10:30 tomorrow.

    The father and son deny forcing or compelling Polish couple Margorsha Bienick and Michal Czesniawski into labour in Nelson.

  13. Slavery trial: Couple 'were asked' to leave the property

    A Polish couple who claim they were treated as slaves at a house in Nelson were actually repeatedly asked to leave the property, a court in Burnley has been told.

    Michal Czerniawski and Malgorzata Bieniek say they were forced to work for father and son Mohammed and Khuram Riaz for just £4 per day. 

    However, the defence for Mr Riaz senior put it to Ms Bieniek that she arrived at the house on Manchester Road without permission and then refused to leave - something she denies. 

    Mohammed and Khuram Riaz both deny charges of requiring another person to perform forced labour. 

  14. Cyclist found injured in Weeton

    A cyclist has been found lying in a road seriously injured by a motorist in Weeton.

    The 47-year-old man was found lying in the middle of in Mythop Road at about 18:10 yesterday.

    The rider, from Poulton, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital, where his condition has been described as stable.

    Police do not believe any other vehicles were involved but are appealing for witnesses.

  15. Lancashire-based supermarket chain reports record Christmas profit

    Lancashire-based supermarket chain Booths has reported its best ever Christmas sales of over £10m.

    During the three week trading period over the holidays, total sales were up by 1.8%. Like-for-like sales were up by 2.6%. 

    Booths has stores in various locations around the county, including Barrowford, Carnforth and Poulton.
