Protesters at Little Plumpton fracking site

Protesters are out at Little Plumpton this afternoon, where preparations to drill for shale gas began yesterday

The government approved energy firm Cuadrilla's plans to frack at the Preston New Road site in October last year.

The firm said it started site construction work on Thursday after Lancashire County Council agreed planning conditions had been met.

Man injured after attempted car-jacking near Clitheroe

A man was injured after being attacked during an attempted car-jacking on the A59 near Clitheroe.

The incident happened at about 15:40 on Tuesday when the 29-year-old from Accrington pulled over near a McDonald's on the A59 after a white van flashed its lights.

The victim was then attacked by two men from the van who also demanded his keys, but he managed to run off.

The police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Body of boy, 14, found in Calder Vale on Tuesday

The body of a 14-year-old boy was found on land in Calder Vale on the edge of the Forest of Bowland earlier this week.

Police were called to Victoria Terrace at about 18:15 on 4 January, where the body of the boy was found on land behind the property.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been passed to the coroner.

Megan Lee, 15, dies after allergic reaction to Hyndburn takeaway

A 15-year-old girl has died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to takeaway food, prompting a police investigation.

Megan Lee, from Oswaldtwistle, died on 1 January, two days after she was admitted to hospital.

The takeaway involved, in the Hyndburn area, has not been identified.

Lancashire Police and the county's Trading Standards team are investigating.

Rivington Pike used in Hollywood film

Rivington Pike, near Chorley, was used as a location in the new Hollywood film, A Monster Calls.

Lancashire Chief Constable replacement sought

A replacement for the UK's longest serving chief constable is being sought, Lancashire's police and crime commissioner has said.

Steve Finnigan, who has led Lancashire Constabulary for 11 years, will stand down in June after plans for his retirement were revealed last year.

Mr Finnigan has been with the force since 2001, when he joined as Assistant Chief Constable after rising through the ranks at Merseyside Police, for whom he had served since 1976.

He earned the Queen's Policing Medal in 2006 and was appointed CBE in 2010.

A 15-year-old girl has died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to takeaway food, prompting a police investigation.

Megan Lee, from Oswaldtwistle, died on New Year's Day. two days after she was admitted to hospital.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out but police said the full results would not be known "for some time".

The takeaway involved, in the Hyndburn area, has not been identified. 

Police have launched an investigation, adding it was carrying out inquiries on behalf of the county's coroner.

Police force signs pledge to help combat mental health discrimination

Lancashire Constabulary has joined a campaign to help combat mental health stigma and discrimination in the workplace.

The charity MIND set up its Blue Light programme to challenge the stigma that can be associated with being open about mental health, and to offer support to members of staff who work in the emergency services.

Members of the emergency services concerned about their wellbeing, or someone they know who works for an emergency service, can contact the Mind Blue Light Programme via Mind's website.

Police officers and staff play vital roles in our communities, supporting the public and often working in incredibly stressful situations. Signing up to Mind's 'Time to Change' pledge is more than just words, there is a whole action plan behind it that will provide the support that's needed."

Drone footage reveals the extent of Pilling fire

Drone footage taken by Lancashire Fire and Rescue service shows the extent of a blaze at a unit on Taylor's Lane in Pilling today.

Firefighters were called out just after 03:00 to tackle the blaze which led to 15 people being evacuated from their homes.

An investigation is taking place to establish the cause of the blaze.

Chorley MP criticises rail fare increases

The Labour MP for Chorley has criticised rail fare increases announced by the government earlier this week.

Lindsay Hoyle claims passengers using the Chorley to Manchester route has seen a 25% increase since 2010. 

Ticket prices have risen by 2.3% on average, with some off-peak fares increasing even more. 

The government said it was delivering the biggest rail modernisation programme for more than a century

Fracking preparations continuing at Preston New Road site

Work is continuing at Preston New Road this morning after energy firm Cuadrilla began preparations yesterday to drill for shale gas at the site.

Planning permission was given to the company in October last year after the government approved plans for fracking at the Little Plumpton location.

The "intial surface work" includes building a new entrance, access road and well pad.

Activity at the site has provoked an angry reaction from environmentalists and local campaigners who have launched a legal challenge.

Workshop fire in Pilling 'under control', say fire crews

A fire at a workshop in Pilling is now "under control", says the fire service.

Fire crews were called out to tackle the blaze just after 03:00 this morning.

At its height, 40 firefighters were tackling the blaze on the industrial estate on Taylor's Lane. 

Fifteen people evacuated from nearby homes are now being allowed to return.  

The fire service is now investigating the cause of the fire.

Firefighters are dealing with a major blaze at an industrial unit in Pilling.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were called out to the workshop just after 03:00 this morning.

Fifteen people living nearby have been evacuated and taken to a rest centre in Thornton Cleveleys.

Eight fire engines are currently at the scene, but Lancashire fire say they will be "scaling back" their operation shortly.

Taylor's Lane, the location of the workshop where the fire happened, is closed and the fire service is asking people to avoid the area.
