  3. Plans for £3.5m development in Fleetwood rejected

    Plans for a £3.5m housing development at the former Fleetwood Pier site has been rejected by councillors.

    Mike Simmons, also known by his stage name Joey Blower, put the plans for 15 modern apartments aimed at over 55s forward.

    The pier was destroyed by a fire in 2008 and previous proposals for hotels had been rejected. 

    A number of concerns about the development were raised by residents to Wyre Council including its potential to change the face of the seafront.

  6. 'Be prepared' for cold snap, health officials warn

    NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is advising people to be prepared for cold weather the next couple of days.

    The Met Office has issued a Level 3 cold weather alert for the North West from Wednesday 4 January to Friday 6 January, which could "increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services".

    The CCG is reminding people that the cold weather can put pressure on health services, and that they should consider options so they use the right service.

  8. Lancashire schoolchildren to take part in birdwatch

    Schoolchildren across Lancashire are set to take part in an annual birdwatch.

    The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch, launched in 2002, takes place during the first half of the spring term and involves children counting birds that visit their school grounds.

    The aim of the survey is to "inspire children to care about the natural world around them" and to encourage youngsters to discover the wildlife they share their school grounds with.

  9. New £1.5m cycleway in Fleetwood

    Work is due to begin on a new £1.5m cycleway in Fleetwood.

    Amounderness Way

    The cycleway will run alongside Amounderness way between the Eros roundabout at the Nautical College and the Denham Way roundabout

    A temporary speed limit of 30mph has been put in place until the end of March, when the Highways England funded project is expected to be completed.

    It is hoped the scheme will encourage people to cycle and walk to work.

  11. 'Special measures' East Lancashire NHS trust rated as 'good'

    A health trust put into special measures three years ago has been praised by inspectors and given a "good" rating.

    East Lancashire Hospitals

    East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission in 2013 following the Keogh review into higher-than-expected death rates.

    The trust runs the Royal Blackburn and Burnley General Hospital.

    The health watchdog's latest review praised improvements in patient care in the emergency department.

  12. Woman with Lancashire connections missing

    A woman who has connections to Lancashire has been missing since Christmas Day.

    Julija Dubovika

    The last contact between police and Julija Dubovika, 30, was on a mobile phone on 25 December 2016.

    She was last believed to have been in the North Devon area but has links to Blackpool and Preston. 

    Julija, also known as Julia Belova, is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, of a slim build, with long, blonde hair, green eyes and a tattoo on each wrist.

    Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.

  13. Man punched in face trying to break-up fight at restaurant

    A member of staff at a restaurant in Bilsborrow has been left with a broken cheekbone after he attempted to break-up a fight.

    The 21-year-old man was punched in the face at the Guys Thatched Hamlet in St Michael's Road at about 01:55 on New Year's Day.

    Police have released CCTV images of a man (pictured above) wanted in connection with the assault.

  15. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust praised for patient care

    East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs hospitals in Blackburn and Burnley, has been praised for improvements in patient care.

    The health watchdog, the Care Quality Commission, gave the trust an overall rating of "good" in its latest inspection.

    In July 2013, it was placed in special measures following the Keogh Review into higher-than-expected death rates. 

    Today's report is a follow up from an inspection in October 2015, which reviewed core services rating Blackburn and Burnley hospitals as "good".

  16. Decision for Fleetwood Pier site due

    The final decision will be made today on plans for a £3.5m development for over 55s on the former Fleetwood Pier site.
