Blackpool man, 20, missing

A 20-year-old man from Blackpool has been missing since Wednesday.

Samuel Thomas, 20, was last seen at about 16.50 in Blackpool Road walking in the direction of Carleton Crematorium.

He was wearing a grey suit, black shirt and grey tie and is described as white, 6ft, slim build and of pale complexion.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

A scooter rider who died in a crash with a car that was performing a U-turn was a "big laugh and a soft bear", his family say.

Student's asteroid research helping Nasa

A student at the University of Central Lancashire has recorded a mile long asteroid speeding past earth.

He is sharing his data with Nasa so researchers there can refine information about asteroid orbits and gather "vital information" which could help protect the earth in the future.

Fire in shipping container with 100 bin bags of clothes

A fire broke out in a shipping container that was storing about 100 bin bags of clothes.

Firefighters were called to a recycling cycle in Glenburn Road, Skelmersdale, at about 07:40.

No-one was injured. An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.

Man, 32, injured in Nelson baseball bat attack

A 32-year-old man suffered head and face injuries after he was followed by a group of men in a car before being attacked with baseball bats.

The man ran off after the driver of the vehicle attempted to hit him but the group then got out and assaulted him in Smith Street, Nelson, at about 01:40 on Wednesday.

He suffered cuts, bruising and lost teeth and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.

Appealing for information, police released pictures of the men wanted in connection to the attack.

Football: Morecambe concerned by Lemos absence

Morecambe's board of directors are "extremely concerned" by the absence of majority shareholder Diego Lemos, and his failure to "deliver on promised investment" at the League Two club.

Rail disruption ahead of holiday weekend

Rail passengers in Lancashire and across Britain are facing potential delays and disruption due to Storm Barbara, Christmas travel and engineering works.

Storm Barbara is forecast to bring high winds to the North West of England this afternoon, meaning trains between Lancaster and Penrith will have to run at reduced speeds. 

As a result, passengers may have to deal with delays of up to 30 minutes between 12:00 and 18:00.

Elsewhere, several stations including Paddington in London will either be partially or completely shut for a number of days due to engineering works.

Lancashire students create music for crimes

Students at Edge Hill University are using real police crime data to create music.

Students are writing computer programmes to generate a range of musical compositions for various crimes.

RAF serviceman's funeral to take place today

The funeral of an RAF serviceman from Lancashire takes place later today.

Shahbaz Saleem, from Reedley near Burnley, served in Afghanistan and Libya.

He died earlier this week from bowel cancer.

The airman was praised by the government after raising more than £16,000 for Pendleside hospice.

Funeral prayers will be held at Ghausia Mosque in Nelson at 13:30.

Accrington man seriously injured in assault

A man has been seriously injured in an attack in Accrington.

The 28-year-old was walking along Richmond Street last night when he was assaulted by "several" men. 

He suffered serious head and chest injuries after being stabbed at least once, and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Concerns for missing Preston man

Concerns are growing for a man from Preston who is missing.

Richard O’Brien, 31, was last seen at his home address in Lea at about 09:30 on Wednesday.

He is described as white, slim build, with short dark brown hair and possibly wearing a grey top.  

Police believe he could be in the Preston area and are asking anyone with information to contact them.

Patients in Lancaster advised to consider alternatives to A&E

Patients in north Lancashire are being advised to think twice before going to Accident and Emergency with minor injuries during the Christmas period due to an increase in demand at the hospitals.

Locals are being asked to consider "appropriate alternatives" to A&E allowing hospitals to focus on more serious and life-threatening injuries.

Royal Lancaster Infirmary are also encouraging people to make sure that their medicine cabinet and first aid kits are well stocked during the festive period.

We expect to see high demand for all services, but especially at A&E, over the holiday period.

The Met Office say the worst of the weather is expected today and tomorrow, but could affect people in Lancashire over the festive season. 

Meanwhile, the RAC are warning motorists in the county that today will be "tough going" for drivers. 

They are urging people to try to travel tomorrow afternoon instead.
