Weather: Staying cold, with patchy fog forming

Temperatures will drop tonight with a widespread frost and patchy fog developing.

A cold and frosty start tomorrow with patchy fog slowly clearing. Later in the day there will be more sunshine, although it will remain cold.

Highs tomorrow of around 8C.

Author shortlisted for debut novel award

A Lancaster-born author has been shortlisted for a national award.

Guinevere Glasfurd is up for the Costa First Novel Award for her book The Words in My Hand.

Blackburn-based poet Melissa Lee-Houghton, from Manchester, is also nominated for the Poetry Award for Sunshine.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in January.

Appeal over missing man from Ormskirk

A 41-year-old man from Ormskirk has been missing since Monday, prompting police to launch an appeal.

Neil Baines, 41, was last seen at an address in Wigan Road about 20:30.

He has links to the Lancaster and Blackburn areas, and police believe he could have travelled to either Southport or Huddersfield.

He is described as white, 5ft 8in tall (1.76m), stocky build, with dark brown cropped hair. He was wearing a dark top, jeans and uses glasses.

Top rating for 'compassionate' hospice

A hospice has been praised for going "the extra mile" for patients and showing them "outstanding kindness and compassion".

East Lancashire Hospice in Blackburn was rated "outstanding" by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after an inspection in September.

It reaches out to marginalised communities using "innovative methods" such as social media, the report said.

The CQC praised staff for treating people with "sensitivity and dignity".

Former England footballer Paul Stewart has spoken of being sexually abused as a youth player.

Mr Stewart, who played for Blackpool, Manchester City and Liverpool, told the Mirror an unnamed coach abused him for years.

He said his attacker threatened to kill his relatives if he told anyone.

It comes after two former Crewe players waived their anonymity to tell of being abused as boys by club coach Barry Bennell, who was jailed in 1998.

A meeting to discuss proposed boundary changes in Burnley will take place later.

The government wants to save millions of pounds by reducing the number of UK MPs by 50 to 600.

'Songaminute Man' Ted heads JustGiving awards

An 80-year-old 'carpool karaoke' star with Alzheimer's disease has been named the UK's "most creative" fundraiser. 

Ted McDermott - known as the Songaminute Man - helped raise £130,000 for charity after son Simon recorded videos of the pair singing in the car around Blackburn.

Mr McDermott is a former Butlin's Redcoat, who spent decades travelling the country singing in clubs. 

His son's video of them singing Quando, Quando, Quando in the car has been viewed two million times.

Tory MP denies expenses allegations

A Conservative MP has denied claiming expenses for driving in the UK whilst he was abroad on official visits.

Official records suggest David Morris, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale in Lancashire, claimed mileage 25 times while travelling on foreign trips.

Twelve of those claims relate to either the day he left the UK or arrived back.

Mr Morris said the information the records are based on is inaccurate. The dates on the system are those "the MPs give us," the expenses watchdog said.
