  3. Investigation into paraglider death launched

    The British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Assocation has launched an investigation after a paraglider was killed in a crash as he landed in a field close to Pilling.

    The paraglider crashed on land near Duck Street in Pilling

    Ben Jones, 37, from Preston, was pronounced dead at the scene, close to Duck Street at about 11:00 on Sunday.  

    Paramedics and an air ambulance attended but he could not be saved, Lancashire Police said.

    The force said inquiries were continuing but the incident is not thought to be suspicious.

    Burnley boss Sean Dyche says Joey Barton's conduct on and off the pitch was 'excellent' when he managed him at Burnley in the Championship.

    The 34-year-old English midfielder has been suspended by Scottish Premiership club Rangers over a training ground row in September.

    Dyche describes Barton as “top class” but also “very demanding”, adding: "I was honest with him, he was honest with me and I found that a good platform to build on.

  6. Glasgow woman missing in Blackpool

    A Glasgow woman who went out nightclubbing with friends in Blackpool has gone missing, say police who are appealing for information.

    Natalie Conway, 32, went to the Lancashire resort for a night out with friends on Saturday.

    She was last seen at the Flamingos Nightclub on Queen Street at about 04:00 on Sunday. She has not contacted her friends since.

    Police said it was "very unusual" for Ms Conway not to have met friends or returned to Scotland.

  7. Chief executive sacked at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust

    The Chief Executive of Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has been sacked after he was found guilty of gross misconduct.

    Jonathan Parry was suspended on full pay, along with three other senior staff members, in August 2015 over whistleblowing claims.

    A disciplinary panel examined 21 allegations and found evidence in 11 counts of misconduct, seven of which amounted to gross misconduct. 

    The nature of the allegations has not been revealed, but the trust said no aspect related to patient care or safety.  

    A trust spokesman confirmed Deputy Director of Performance Richard McCarthy had his suspension lifted and is free to work.

    A disciplinary investigation is continuing into two other staff members. Mr Parry has the right to appeal.   

  8. Van driver dies after being found unconscious on M6 hard shoulder

    A man in his 40s has died after being found unconscious in his van following a crash on the M6 near Preston.

    He was driving northbound near to junction 31, Samlesbury, when he hit the central reservation at about 13:25 yesterday before crossing three lanes and stopping on the hard shoulder.

    He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

    No other vehicles were involved. Police are appealing for information.

  10. Motorcyclist taken to hospital after crash with car

    A motorcyclist has been taken to hospital following a crash with a car in Lancaster.

    Little Fell Lane

    The 53-year-old man was injured in Little Fell Lane at about 17:30 last night.

    He has been taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

    The driver of the car - a 55-year-old woman from Lancaster - was not hurt.

    Plans for a new training complex have been revealed by Preston North End.

    The 172-acre scheme will consist of the training complex, parkland and a new residential development scheme.

    The plans will be officially unveiled at a public consultation open day in November.

  14. Wildlife charity eyeing plan to take over countryside services

    The Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT) says it is interested in taking over a number of the county's countryside sites.

    Lancashire County Council is looking for groups to manage its 93 green spaces in a bid to make a number of savings.

    The authority is in talks with a number of organisations who have expressed an interest in taking on future ownership or operation of some of the sites.

    Alan Wright from LWT says the charity will need some financial support to make any move.

    A paraglider has been killed in crash as he landed in a field close to Pilling.

    The 37-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, close to Duck Street at about 11:00 on Sunday.
