  3. Football: Preston skipper Clarke had no hesitation in signing new deal

    The Preston North End captain, Tom Clarke, says it was always his intention to sign a new contract and had been in talks over a new deal since pre-season.

    Clarke has signed a new three-year deal, keeping him at the Championship club until 2019.

    The 28-year-old moved to Deepdale in 2013 from Huddersfield after he progressed through their youth system.

  4. Blackpool hopes for Great Exhibition boost

    Blackpool's bid to host the Great Exhibition of the North in 2018 reaches a crucial stage on Friday.

    The bid committee will have a final interview with a panel of experts having last week hosted a group from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

    The three-month exhibition will showcase art, design and culture and Blackpool is competing with three other areas for the right to host it.

  5. Plane returns to airport after technical fault reported

    A plane carrying holiday makers from Manchester Airport to the Greek Island of Rhodes has returned to the airport after reporting a technical fault.

    The Jet2 aircraft spent more than an hour circling Lancashire before landing safely back just after midday.

    The airline said it was diverted back as a precautionary measure.

    Former Lancashire and England cricketer Ken Higgs has died, aged 79.

    The right-arm fast bowler played 15 Tests and took 71 wickets in an international career between 1965 and 1968.

    He made his Lancashire debut in 1958, taking more than 1,000 first-class wickets.

    Flags will fly at half-mast at Old Trafford ahead of tonight's T20 International between England and Pakistan.

  10. New nature reserves to be created in Hyndburn

    Hyndburn is to receive national recognition for two local beauty spots.

    The two new local nature reserves being created by Hyndburn Borough Council are Peel Park, including the Coppice, Arden Hall and the Plantation Road area in Accrington.

    The second is at Woodnook Vale which encompasses parts of Bullough Park and the hillside to Rothwell Heights at Willows Lane.

    The council says the reserves have been made possible after years of hard work by local groups and residents. They will be officially created next summer.

  11. Lancaster cancer patient 'frustrated' treatment are not yet available on NHS

    A man who is suffering from kidney cancer has said he is "frustrated" to know treatment drugs that could help him are not yet available on the NHS.

    David, 70, from Lancaster, was diagnosed with the disease nine years ago.

    The NHS medicine governing body NICE will meet later today to decide whether to give Nivolumab - which is already being used to treat skin cancer - the go ahead.

    There are fears it could be too expensive.

  12. Boxing: Fury v Klitschko rematch date confirmed

    Morecambe-based Tyson Fury's world heavyweight title rematch with Wladimir Klitschko has been confirmed for 29 October.

    The British world champion Fury, 28, claimed the WBO, WBA and IBF belts from the 40-year-old Ukrainian in November 2015, but pulled out of a July rematch with an ankle injury.

    The fight is at Manchester Arena.

  14. Lancashire Police officer sacked for leaking incidents

    A Lancashire Police officer has been sacked for gross misconduct after leaking details of incidents.

    PC Jayson Lobo, from Blackburn, faced nine allegations of sending electronic communications with details of police incidents to third parties.

    Each allegation was proven at a Special Case hearing in Leyland and the former UK middle distance athlete was dismissed without notice.

    In an unrelated case, Mr Lobo is due to stand trial for voyeurism offences.

    The former Commonwealth Games runner has denied 18 offences of sexual spying against eight women allegedly committed between December 2011 and May 2015.

    The former Preston-based officer is on bail ahead of a trial at Liverpool Crown Court on 16 January.

  15. Police officer to face misconduct hearing

    A Lancashire police officer will face a misconduct hearing next week. 

    It is alleged that PC Iain Norton breached the standards of professional behaviour by driving a police vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit and being unfit to perform his duties. 

    The hearing is taking place at Leyland Police Station on 13 September. 

    Lancashire Police said it will not be making any comment before the hearing.

  16. Football: Preston captain Clarke signs new deal

    The former England Under-19 international joins Paul Huntington and Daniel Johnson, who recently agreed new deals with the Championship side.
