  4. Fylde Ladies announce death of England youth player

    Fylde Ladies have announced the death of England Women's U19s player Zoe Tynan.

    Tynan began her career at the age of six at Liverpool Feds, followed by six years at Everton’s Centre of Excellence. She also had a spell with Manchester City before switching to Fylde earlier this month.

    She was part of the England youth set-up and involved in a training camp at St George’s Park earlier this month.

    England youth coach Mo Marley said: “This is truly awful news and we were all so sad to hear of Zoe’s passing.

    “Zoe has been involved in our squads for a number of years and was not only a very talented midfielder, but a hugely-liked and popular member of the team."

    Police have named the man whose body was found in Preston docks on Saturday.

    Martyn Cunliffe, 26, had been reported missing from his home in Preston last week. 

    His death is not being treated as suspicious.

    The revamped Checkatrade Trophy has begun with record low attendances, as changes to the tournament left fans unwilling to attend matches.

    The lowest crowd of the night came at Highbury, where only 392 fans watched Fleetwood beat Blackburn's development squad.

    And things were similarly sparse at Accrington, where only 585 watched Stanley lose against Crewe.

    BBC Sport contacted the EFL for its take on the competition's opening night of action, but it declined to comment.

  8. Man fatally struck by car in Whitestake was 'wonderfully caring'

    A pedestrian who died when a car mounted a grass verge and struck him was "wonderfully caring", his family has said.

    Nicholas Farrimond, known as Nick, suffered multiple injuries after being hit in Pope Lane, Whitestake, Preston, shortly before 01:00 on Monday. The 35-year-old died at the scene.

    His family said: "There is a void in all our lives that will never be filled," adding he was "a kind and most especially funny young man". 

    A 32-year-old man, from Preston, arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving remains in custody.

    Accrington Stanley have added Bristol City defender Zak Vyner to their squad.

    The 19-year-old has signed a loan deal until January with the League Two club.

  10. Police 'increasingly concerned' about missing Nelson 13-year-old

    Police are "increasingly concerned" about a 13-year-old girl who went missing from Nelson on Sunday.

    Jessica Wallwork was last seen at about 20:45 on Sunday at an address on Railway Street in the town.

    She is described as white with shoulder-length, light brown hair and was wearing a blue hooded top with "LEC" on the front, light blue skinny jeans.

    Police added that she was carrying a cream-coloured handbag and may have been wearing trainers.

    Blackpool have signed goalkeeper Dean Lyness on a one-year deal with the option of another year.

    Lyness, 25, who was a free agent after leaving Burton Albion, made nine appearances for Blackpool during two loan spells last season.

    A teenager from West Lancashire who was diagnosed with bowel cancer has started a blog to raise awareness of the symptoms in young people.

    Hannah Lyson, 19, from Burscough near Ormskirk uses her website to share her experiences of diagnosis and treatment - as well as raising funds for the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.  

  14. Council leader believes fines necessary to improve education standards

    The leader of Lancashire County Council says she has sympathy for parents who have been fined for taking their children out of school during term time, but they have to understand why fines were introduced.

    A Freedom of Information request has shown more than 5,500 fines were handed to parents over the past 12 months - more than were handed out in the previous year.

    Jennifer Mein admits that while this is a high figure, County Hall also has to fund and run 600 schools.

  16. Boy critically injured after running onto M6 carriageway

    A teenage boy who was hit on the M6 yesterday had been in a car which was parked at Charnock Richard services, it has emerged.

    The boy ran into the carriageway and is in a critical condition in hospital.

    The southbound section of the motorway was closed for four hours.

  17. Football: Derby's Hendrick close to Burnley move

    Burnley have agreed a club record fee to sign Republic of Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick from Derby County.

    The 24-year-old is having a medical with the Premier League club and is expected to complete his move to Turf Moor on transfer deadline day.

    The Clarets had a bid for Hendrick turned down earlier this summer.

  18. Travel: Two vehicle crash closes A6068
