Health specialists have sent out a warning after 14 people visiting a farm in West Sussex were infected with a serious stomach infection.

Public Health England (PHE) South East received reports of people becoming ill after visiting Gaston Farm, near Slindon from 17 March to 11 April.

The initial symptoms of the infection, caused by cryptosporidium, can take up to two weeks to emerge so people should remain vigilant if they have visited the farm during this period.

It is caused by a tiny organism, and is most likely to have resulted from contact with animals shedding the organism in their faeces.

The infection is easily passed on so people are advised to maintain good hand hygiene standards around the home.

Dr Kevin Carroll, a PHE consultant said: “Anyone suffering from diarrhoea symptoms is being advised not to attend school or childcare settings for 48 hours after recovery. And if you have been diagnosed with cryptosporidium you must not swim until at least two weeks after the symptoms have ended."

The farm is assisting PHE and remains closed to visitors.
