  11. Failed Channel crossings prompt rescue attempts

    Alex Bish

    Investigative journalist, BBC South East

Two rescue operations in just three days off the coast of Northern France show how desperate some migrants are to cross the Channel to reach Kent.

On Sunday morning an Iraqi national on a makeshift craft was rescued by a boat owner whilst drifting off Dunkirk. The 45 year-old was treated for hypothermia.

This morning the French authorities scrambled a Naval helicopter to search for three migrants that got into difficulty off Wissant, near Calais. The trio had set off from a beach at 23:00 BST last night.

The UK Border Force has launched four new fast patrol vessels to help tackle migrant boat smuggling after a series of incidents off Kent in 2016.

  15. Pride: Extra long trains, but fewer drivers

    Lizzie Massey

    BBC Live reporter

Govia Thameslink Railway will be running longer Thameslink trains to and from Brighton during next month's Pride celebrations.

But the event will be affected by the Aslef drivers’ strike on Southern.

Pride runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 August, with the union members striking on 1, 2 and 4 August, with the support of RMT drivers.

Southern says it plans to run more trains and additional carriages on Southern and Gatwick Express on Saturday, as well as the new, longer 12-carriage Thameslink trains.

Quote Message: Aslef has called three days of strikes in a deliberate move to cause maximum disruption for passengers.
Quote Message: We’re deeply disappointed. We have been working very closely with the organisers to ensure that this year's event is a resounding success despite the industrial action." from Angie Doll Southern's passenger services director

  16. Attempt to smuggle cannabis resin into UK thwarted

    Sue Nicholson

    BBC News

    Cannabis resin

Cannabis resin with an estimated street value of £11.3m has been found hidden among pallets of flat packed wooden crates on a Bulgarian-registered lorry at the Port of Dover.

The vehicle was stopped by Border Force officials as it tried to enter the UK on 12 July.

When it was searched 143 packages, each weighing about 30kg (66lbs), were found hidden in specially hollowed out sections within each pallet.

A 42-year-old Bulgarian man was arrested and later released pending further investigations.

Two days later, a 50-year-old man was arrested at an address in Hythe. He was later released on bail.
