A young woman stabbed to death in broad daylight in a Chatham car park has been named as Molly McLaren, a University of Kent student from Cobham.

She was killed yesterday inside a car parked outside the Dockside Retail Outlet in front of shocked eyewitnesses.

Joshua Stimpson, from Wouldham, near Rochester, was arrested at the scene and has today been charged with murder.

The sister of one of the men who died at Camber last summer has told a press conference the beach wasn't safe.

Earlier a coroner concluded the deaths of seven men there were due to misadventure.

The coroner said it was "not known" whether having lifeguards at the time would have prevented the deaths.

Rother District Council said it has made improvements "year on year" at Camber in response to risks identified. But even with lifeguards, the council said the sea can be unpredictable.

Hunt on as rapist flees open prison

A convicted rapist who has absconded from an open prison is being hunted by police.

James Donoghue is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 10 years at HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire.

He was jailed for attacking a woman at knifepoint in her home in the Maidstone area of Kent in 2009.

Police have warned people not to approach him and call 999 if they see him.

He is described as white, about 5ft 10ins tall and of slight build. He is bald and has blue eyes.

The deaths of seven men at Camber Sands beach last summer were through misadventure, a coroner has concluded.

Tragedy struck as Mohit Dupar, 36, tried to reach Brazilian Gustavo Silva Da Cruz, 19, as he got into difficulty on 24 July, but both died.

A month later five young friends aged between 18 and 27 drowned at the same beach after being seen playing volleyball in the sea.

Joshua Stimpson, 25, has been charged with the murder of Molly McLaren in a busy Chatham car park yesterday.

Molly McLaren sustained injuries consistent with a stabbing and died at the scene outside the Dockside Retail Outlet.

Joshua Stimpson, from Wouldham, was remanded to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on 3 July 2017.

Police say the victim and the suspect were known to each other and enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

Illicit diesel seized in raid

A property in Tonbridge is among 20 raided by customs officers investigating a £3m fuel laundering fraud.

The raids, which involved 150 officers, took place in Watford, Hayes, Southend, Romford, Grays, Thurrock and London.

Eight men, from Romford, Watford, Southend, Hayes and County Armagh in Northern Ireland, were arrested, and have been released under investigation.

Around £100m in unpaid duty and taxes is lost each year to fuel fraud in the UK, money that should be helping fund public services. The toxic waste from fuel laundering poses a real threat to the environment and costs thousands of pounds to dispose of safely."
