BreakingUniversity to stop taking students at Thanet campus

Bryony MacKenzie

Education correspondent, BBC South East Today

Canterbury Christ Church University has announced that it is ceasing student recruitment to its Broadstairs Campus from September 2018.

Courses will be relocated to Canterbury over the next few years.

The University says it will be “working closely with our staff and students over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition”.

It says that all courses will remain open and new ones will be created.

The University’s Broadstairs Campus was created in 2000 to provide access to higher education for local people.

But a spokesman said that the majority of students from Thanet (650) are choosing to study at the main campus in Canterbury with 135 students opting for Broadstairs.

This decision has been taken after careful consideration and in the best interests of our current and future students. I am personally aware of the importance of access to higher education in Thanet, having been involved in the creation of the campus 17 years ago while at the Higher Education Funding Council for England.”

Pilots demand more action against laser pens

Alex Bish

Investigative journalist, BBC South East

There's been an increase in laser pen attacks on aircraft.

Last year there were 1,200 incidents of pilots having the powerful lights shone into their cockpits, including a police helicopter flying over Crawley and an RAF Chinook helicopter over the South Downs.

Gatwick and Heathrow Airports have also both reported a growing number of incidents.

The British Airline Pilots' Association says it wants a specific offence created to cover the misuse of laser pens.

When a laser pen is pointed at an aircraft it can dazzle and distract the pilot, and has the potential to cause a crash. Last year's incident figures remain dangerously high, with the equivalent of more than three laser attacks a day across the UK.'

Southern overtime ban due to 'total lack of trust'

Southern logo

Southern rail passengers face fresh disruption to their journeys on Thursday with the train drivers' union Aslef due to introduce a ban on overtime.

General Secretary Mick Whelan said the ban reflects the "total loss of trust and goodwill between train drivers and the company".

"Drivers work overtime on an entirely voluntary basis and have no contractual obligation to do so", he said.

However, Southern's passenger services director Angie Doll said the action was going to be "very inconvenient" but the company would be putting in a "revised timetable".
