Southern crisis: 'We need a politics aside approach'

Aslef members have rejected a deal with Southern rail that would have ended a long-running industrial dispute.

It had been arguing with parent firm, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), over driver-only operated (DOO) trains.

Members of the drivers' union rejected the deal by 54.1% to 45.9%. The turnout was 72.7%.

Peter Richardson: Ex-Kent & England batsman dies aged 85

Former Kent and England opening batsman Peter Richardson has died at the age of 85.

Richardson scored 2,061 runs in 34 Tests between 1956 and 1963, making five centuries, and was named Wisden cricketer of the year in 1957.

He made 104 at Old Trafford in the Ashes Test of 1956, the match in which Jim Laker took a record 19 wickets.

A mother and daughter who offered their parking space to a woman in labour at Tunbridge Wells hospital ended up helping deliver her baby.

Today the good Samaritans have been to meet him - and his grateful parents.

Footballer sentenced for racially aggravated attack

Luke James Burdon was playing in a match for Kennington Reserves FC in Ashford in February when he elbowed a member of the opposing team in the face, while using racist language.

His victim - who was playing for South Darenth FC - had his jaw broken in three places. Burdon's been sentenced to two years in a young offender's institution.

The 21-year-old sprinter, who won Olympic bronze as part of Britain's 4x100m women's relay team at Rio 2016, said she was "gutted" to miss out.

Less well known was his interest in science, but now an article he's believed to have written at Chartwell in 1939, called 'Are We Alone in the Universe?', has been been rediscovered.
