Lucky escape for pair as fire spreads through home

A couple from Rochester had a lucky escape after they were woken in the early hours of yesterday morning by a fire. 

It broke out in there home on Sidney Road at around 03.20 GMT. It's thought the fire was caused by the flue from a log burner, which ignited the joist between the ground and first floor causing the damage.   

Man exposes himself to pedestrian

Kent Police are looking for this man after he exposed himself to a woman in Canterbury.

A woman in her early 20s was walking down Tenterden Drive at 11.20 GMT on Wednesday 1 February when a man driving a small white van pulled up and asked her for directions. As she spoke to him she could see that he was exposed.

The suspect is described as a white man aged in his late 20s or early 30s with very short mousey brown hair. 

He is also described as having a ‘cheeky look’, ears that stuck out, and blue eyes.

Watch: 100 years of Biggin Hill

Biggin Hill Airport today begins celebrations to mark its one hundreth birthday.

It was originally established during WWI, but the airport is most famous for the vital role it played in the WWII, where it served as a command base for Hurricanes and Spitfires during the Battle of Britain. 

Caroline Davies sent this from the runway.

Biggin Hill anniversary marked

A key date in Britain's military history has been celebrated today at Biggin Hill airport.

On this day, 13 February 1917, the War Office opened the first military installation there - an experimental wireless communications station.

By the Second World War, Biggin Hill had grown to become a key strategic base for Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft, as one of the principal Battle of Britain airfields. Our reporter Sara Smith is spending the day there.

Southern row: Driver's running 'a thousand' services alone

The equivalent of a thousand Southern services per year are operating without a second member of staff on board, the RMT union has claimed.

The union is locked in a bitter, ongoing dispute with Southern over changes to the role of guards.

The claims come ahead of talks scheduled for tomorrow.

The RMT says new figures show that on nine days this year, at least 26 trains did not have an Onboard Supervisor. 

Southern says there are exceptional circumstances when they will run a train without a second person, rather than cancel it.

A toddler from Tunbridge Wells has died - barely two weeks after £250,000 was raised to fly her to America for what her parents hoped would be life-saving surgery. 

Two year old Florence Jackson, had a rare cancerous tumour. Her family say she's left a huge hole in their hearts.

Investigations after A229 death

Police investigating a fatal collision in Maidstone over the weekend are appealing for witnesses. 

A 37-year-old man from Rochester was pronounced dead at the scene on the A229 Chatham Road, after his silver VW Golf left the carriageway of the slip road near the Running Horse roundabout and collided with trees and a telegraph pole.

The accident happened just after 03:30 GMT yesterday.

A Serious Case Review will be carried out at a young offenders centre in Kent following reports of abusive behaviour. 

Police began an investigation after BBC Panorama broadcast behind-the-scenes footage from the Rochester-based centre in January 2016.

Today John Drew, chairman of Medway Safeguarding Children Board, said: “The Medway Safeguarding Children Board (MSCB) will be conducting a Serious Case Review (SCR) in relation to alleged abuse of children at the Medway Secure Training Centre (STC).

"The SCR will identify where lessons can be learned about the way that organisations linked to the centre worked together and individually.

"An independent chair and reviewer will be appointed to conduct the review.”

Lanes reopened after M25 crash

Four cars and a lorry were involved in a crash on the M25 earlier. 

Police said no-one was hurt in the accident between junctions two and three of the clockwise carriageway.

Two lanes were shut while the debris was cleared but has since reopened.

The Hawks snatches World Grand Prix title

Ditton's Barry Hawkins has won the World Grand Prix title, despite a fightback from Ryan Day. 

He won 10-7 in Preston to win the third ranking title of his career.

It wasn't plain sailing though as Hawkins lost the first frame, but went 9-3 ahead after five century breaks, before Day fought back to 9-7.

Car fire near Whitstable

Dramatic footage of a car on fire has been filmed outside a fast food restaurant in Chestfield near Whitstable. 

The two minute video posted on social media shows flames leaping from the car's engine and fire crews arriving. Although the car was damaged nobody was hurt.
