  18. How long is it since Southern commuters had some good news?

    Tom Edwards

    Transport Correspondent, BBC London

This suspension does sound like very good news in the short-term for commuters - at least next week's 3 days of ASLEF drivers' strikes have been called off

That would have closed nearly all Southern services again.

By agreeing to these new unusual talks at the TUC it does at least show both sides - ASLEF and Southern - are willing to try and find a solution.

Also, strikingly these talks have the blessing of the Department for Transport.

What is not straight forward though is the train drivers' union ASLEF aren't the only ones in this dispute.

The RMT represents guards who will still strike on Monday. It is now trying to be included in the latest talks. It's not clear they will be.

And while ASLEF's move is not unexpected, the RMT won't be happy if the drivers have gone it alone.

The language from Southern and ASLEF indicates a thaw, and perhaps a de-escalation but commuters have been through far too much to believe this is the end.
