    Jon Hunt

    Reporter, BBC South East Today

Alan Peters, 78 of Ambleside Valley Drive, Gravesend, Kent has been found guilty of 3 counts of causing death by dangerous driving by a jury at Luton crown court.

Mr Peters was driving a double-decker coach carrying cheerleaders from Kent, on the M1 near Flitwick in Bedfordshire in the early hours of 14 February 2015.

He was driving on the hard shoulder of a 'smart motorway' which the court heard was signposted 'for emergency use only'.

Mr Peters told the court he believed the motorway gantry signs had indicated "congestion, use hard shoulder."

Travelling at 61mph he crashed into the rear of an Audi car which had stopped on the hard shoulder to deal with an oil warning light.

The driver of the Audi and his two back seat passengers died.

Mr Peters has also been found guilty of causing serious injury to Jake Dorling, who was a front seat passenger and who survived the collision.
