WWI 1914 Christmas truce: 'Stop it at once' order auctioned

A World War One memo that hints at how British Army chiefs tried to prevent the famous 1914 Christmas Day truce is to be auctioned.

Men emerged from trenches into parts of No Man's Land in 1914 to swap gifts, sing carols and play football.

But one order sent late on Christmas Eve ordered British soldiers not to communicate with the Germans - and to open fire on any who approached. Full story here.

The actress and campaigner Juliet Stevenson, who's visited the so-called Jungle camp in Calais, says more should be done to help the unaccompanied minors living there.

The Home Office said it already plans to transfer 150 children this year.

Collapsed M20 motorway footbridge to be removed

A footbridge over a motorway which partially collapsed when it was struck by a lorry will be removed at the weekend.

The bridge over the M20 near Maidstone was hit by a lorry carrying a digger on Saturday.

Removal works will be carried out on the footbridge that collapsed on the M20 last weekend, but it means that motorway will have to close completely.
