  4. Objection over Canadian slate proposed for roof

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Historic England is objecting to proposals for foreign slate to be used for the re-roofing of Dorchester's Corn Exchange.

    Dorchester's Corn Exchange

The conservation body said using Canadian slate would result in "the harmful erosion of the integrity and authenticity of this historic roof".

The town council, which owns the building, is planning to re-roof the Grade-II listed roof next year at an estimated cost of £250,000 to deal with leaks and improve insulation levels.

Where possible the existing slates are to be reused but the council said it will have to use some new tiles with the Canadian slate option selected by the architects as the best match.
