    Campsfield House

A Sri Lankan asylum seeker has been awarded £19,500 in damages from the Home Office for his unlawful detention in the UK.

His barrister, David Lock QC, said the 29-year-old man was not given his mandated medical examination when he was first admitted to Campsfield immigration removal centre at Kidlington, Oxfordshire, in 2016.

As a result the man, known as "KG", spent 30 days in unlawful detention, "gripped by fear that he was about to be put on a plane to go back to the place where he had been tortured," Mr Lock said.

Judge Alison Foster QC told the High Court there was "independent medical evidence consistent with what he says about his treatment in Sri Lanka."
