  2. Armed Forces to provide ceremonial support at royal wedding

    Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding day will feature regiments and units that have a special relationship with the royal who served in the military for a decade, the Ministry of Defence has announced.

    Household Cavalry troopers will line the staircase at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, where the couple will be married on May 19.

    Streets within the precincts of the castle will be lined by members of the Windsor Castle Guard from 1st Battalion Irish Guards, and by Armed Forces personnel from the Royal Navy Small Ships and Diving, Royal Marines, 3 Regiment Army Air Corps, The Royal Gurkha Rifles and RAF Honington.

    Musical will be provided by the Band of the Irish Guards.

    Trumpeters and a Captain's Escort from the Household Cavalry will also provide ceremonial support bringing the total number of Armed Forces involved with the wedding to more than 250.

  3. Thatched hotel staff thank firefighters for 'saving' building

    Staff at a thatched hotel and pub that was partially damaged in a roof fire have thanked firefighters for "saving" the building.

    More than 120 firefighters tackled the blaze at The Potters Heron, in Ampfield near Romsey, Hampshire, on 19 March.

    No-one was hurt in the fire, which is believed to have started in the chimney.

    On Monday hotel director Ted Kennedy said it had since reopened and designs were being drawn up for the damaged section to be rebuilt.

  5. Mutilated cat found in Hampshire garden

    The mutilated body of a cat had been found in a garden in Hampshire.

    The Thicket, Portchester

    Police said the animal was discovered in The Thicket (pictured) in Portchester, Fareham.

    Whiteley Village Vet Centre, where the cat was taken, has reported the incident to Snarl animal rescue and Cats Protection.

    Snarl said it was investigating and would look at possible links to the infamous serial cat killer.

    The find is the second in a week in the area, a spokeswoman added.

  7. Traveller encampment leaves car park

    Travellers have left a public car pack where they have camped for more than two weeks.

    Their departure comes after Oxford City Council served a court order on Tuesday instructing them to leave.

    The caravans arrived at Redbridge Park and Ride on 10 March and at one point about 36 were on the site.

    Oxford City Council said rubbish left by the travellers was now being cleared and it expected the car park to be back to normal shortly.

  9. School's boarding house plans approved

    Plans to build a new boarding house at Ryde School on the Isle of Wight have been approved by council planners.

    The proposals will go before the secretary of state, following an objection from Sport England.

    Revised plans, with changes to the design of the boarding house, were submitted to Isle of Wight Council in December after the authority refused the original proposals.

  10. Teenagers in meningitis B vaccine trial

    Teenagers are being asked to take part in an Oxford-based study to learn if immunising them against meningitis B could protect them and other people.

    The NHS wants 24,000 to take part in the Oxford Vaccine Group's Be On The Team trial, which is helped by National Institute for Health Research funding.

    Bacteria at the back of the throat can cause meningitis and the study will see if vaccination can stop this happening.

    The trial will take place in four waves of recruitment over the next two year

  13. Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda to play Reading after bandmate's death

    Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda has announced his first UK shows since the death of bandmate Chester Bennington.

    The rapper and keyboardist will play at the Reading and Leeds festivals this summer.

    Chester, Linkin Park's lead singer, took his own life in July 2017 following a struggle with depression and addiction.

    Shinoda has described the grief he felt following his friend's death and how it fed into his latest EP Post Traumatic.
