RSPCA reports rise in animal cruelty claims

Hampshire has been named as one of the UK's worst places for complaints of animal cruelty by the RSPCA.

The charity looked into 149,604 complaints in total compared to 143,004 in 2015, but the number of successful prosecutions fell more than 6% to 744.

The county was one of 10 hotspots for complaints in 2016 with 4,131.

The RSPCA said the surge in complaints may be due to increased use of social media.

The charity said it also investigated more than 400 allegations of animal cruelty per day last year - a rise of nearly 5% compared to the previous 12 months.

School to be run by Aspirations Academy Trust

Isle of Portland academy IPACA is to be run by the Aspirations Academy Trust from September.

Catherine Shaw, chair of governors at IPACA, said: “IPACA needs a partner that can bring the skills and resources the school can't provide itself in order to rapidly improve and prevent more children receiving an education that is below expectations."

The academy school has recently been rated inadequate by Ofsted and seen its principal resign and announced cost cutting could see jobs axed.

The school was placed in special measures by Ofsted in January, following an inspection in November.

Joss Hayes, the school's principal, walked out at the end of last month.
