Online dating fraud victim numbers at record high

The number of people defrauded in the UK by online dating scams reached a record high in 2016, the Victoria Derbyshire programme has learned

According to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, there were 3,889 victims of so-called romance fraud last year, who handed over a record £39m. 

Action Fraud, the UK's cyber-crime reporting centre, says it receives more than 350 reports of such scams a month.

One woman from Hampshire lost £140,000 through several scams.

Driver assaulted in Fleet

A driver has been allegedly attacked by the occupant of another car which pulled up in front of him in Fleet.

The 68-year-old man was reportedly assaulted in Bourley Road at about 16:00 GMT on Sunday, causing him facial injuries.

An Aldershot man and a woman from Church Crookham, Fleet, both aged 23, have been arrested in connection with the incident, police said.

Trading Standards teams 'struggling to visit' scam victims

Officials from trading standards say they are struggling to visit people who are likely to fall victim to scams, because of staff shortages.

Details of 86,000 people on so-called "suckers lists" have been passed to trading standards departments across England, according to BBC research.

The victims - many of them elderly - are sent bogus offers in the post.

Data suggests fewer than a third of them have been visited by trading standards officers to warn them.

Dorset saw the second highest number of scam victim referrals between 2013 and 2016.

Councillors in Fareham have approved plans for an electricity station and underground cables, as part of a wider scheme to link the electricity transmission systems of the UK and France.

The IFA2 project involves laying undersea cables from Normandy to Hill Head beach.

A planning committee voted by a margin of seven to two to allow a converter station to be built at the Daedalus site at Lee-on-the-Solent, as well as the laying of underground cables at Daedalus, Hill Head and Chilling.

The council received 1,134 objections to the scheme, including worries about noise and health risks from electromagnetic fields.

Driver 'pulled from car in attack'

A man is reported to have leapt into a car in Poole and attacked the driver, causing the vehicle to crash into a wall.

The victim was driving along Bourne Valley Road on Friday night, when an "unknown man" reportedly opened the passenger door and "jumped in feet first", police have said.

It is alleged the victim was then pulled out of the car and further assaulted by two men before they ran down Princess Road.A 23-year-old man from Poole and a 29-year-old man of no fixed abode have been arrested on suspicion of robbery offences and have been released on police bail.

Fog disruption continues on Wightlink services

Delays for ferry passengers to and from the Isle of Wight are continuing due to the fog.

The Portsmouth-Fishbourne (car ferry service) is delayed by 45 minutes. However a backlog of traffic at Fishbourne is causing further delays.

The Lymington-Yarmouth (car ferry service) is suspended due to thick fog.

And the Portsmouth Harbour-Ryde (catamaran service) is suffering delays of 30 minutes.

New £4m art gallery planned for Sherborne

A new £4m art gallery that would incorporate a tourist information centre and include a restaurant could be built in Dorset.

Sherborne Community Arts Centre Trust hopes to create the venue on a site behind the town's Paddock Gardens on Newland. 

The plans also include three gallery spaces, a coffee shop and a sensory or memory garden. 

The town council wants a public consultation to be held over the plans.

Decision due on UK-France electricity link

Fareham Borough Council planners are due to make a decision today over a cross-channel electricity project.

The National Grid wants to build a 22m (72ft) high building at Daedalus Airfield to join 120 miles (200km) of seabed cable to a connection building in France at Tourbe in Normandy.

IFA2 is a £500m National Grid scheme which aims to secure electricity supplies in the UK.

If it goes ahead work could start on the site in late 2017.

Man to face trial over prison officer killing

A 32-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of an off-duty prison officer who died following an alleged assault during a night out.

Father-of-two Nick Medlin, 57, from Ventnor, Isle of Wight, died on Christmas Day following the incident in Pier Street outside the Rose Inn pub.

Michael Hudson, from the Nottingham area but of no fixed address, appeared at Winchester Crown Court earlier and denied a charge of manslaughter.

Mr Medlin worked at HMP Parkhurst.

Coach praises player who pitched in at kids' session

Kids' football coach Will Chitty has praised Portsmouth FC's Christian Burgess after he pitched in to help at a park training session on Saturday.

Mr Chitty said the defender gave the under-12s a training session before watching a match and posing for photographs.

Pompey defender turns up at kids' park training session

Pompey's Christian Burgess paid a surprise visit to a youth training session in the city's Bransbury Park after his team's match against Crawley was called off. 

The defender tweeted that he didn't know what to do with himself when Saturday's match was postponed due to a frozen pitch. 

Among dozens of responses was one from coach Will Chitty, inviting Burgess to his under-12s football session.

To Mr Chitty's surprise, the player turned up.

Minister visits £44m flood scheme in Portsmouth

Floods minister Therese Coffey is in Portsmouth today to see a £44m scheme to create five miles of new flood defences in North Portsea.

The new defences are aimed at protecting 2,066 homes and businesses.

Convicted murderer still missing

Police are still trying to trace a convicted murderer who is wanted for breaching his licence conditions.

Jamie Frater, 43, was jailed for life in 1993 for the murder of teacher Geoffrey du Rose in Bournemouth.

He went on the run after failing to return to prison in 2012, but later gave himself up. He also absconded from open prison in 2001.  

Police said he breached his licence conditions last Tuesday. Members of the public are being advised not to approach Frater, but immediately call 999.

M3 crash delays clearing

Traffic delays are expected to ease on the M3 heading southbound following a crash just after J8, A30 (Andover) involving multiple vehicles.

Delays of more than two hours had been reported.

Fog and icy roads lead to multiple crashes in Dorset

The fog and wintry weather has continued to affect motorists in Dorset this morning.

Police said there had been more that a dozen crashes during the rush hour and urged motorists to take extra care on the roads as temperatures remained low.
