Changes proposed to island council tax benefits

Isle of Wight Council is reviewing its council tax support scheme for people on low incomes.

The authority is asking people for their views on the proposals which would affect 7,000 claimants.

Changes being considered include:

  • Reducing the maximum level of support from 80% to either 75% or 70%
  • Reducing the period which a person can be out of the country from 13 weeks to four weeks
  • Limit the number of children in the calculation to a maximum of two for new children born after 1 April 2017
  • Limit the reduction to a maximum council tax band C charge

For the full survey, visit the Isle of Wight Council website.

Isle of Wight Council

The challenges the council faces have been widely publicised and we are having to look closely at everything we do in order to run the council as efficiently as possible so that our limited funds can be spent in those most in need. As part of this annual review we have looked carefully at the Local Council Tax Support Scheme and identified a number of potential changes which would generate savings for the council while still providing a fair level of support to those residents who are on a low income

A27 'likely to be closed' after water main bursts

Southern Water now says it may have to shut an area of the A27 in Southampton to allow emergency repair work to a water main.

The main burst in Kanes Hill earlier.

The utility firm said customers who were without water earlier should find their supplies have been restored.

It is likely that we will have to close a section of the A27 while we carry out this emergency repair work and we are liaising with our colleagues at the council regarding this. We had to carry out emergency work to reduce the flow of water to the main while we investigated the source of the burst - this would have caused a temporary loss of water to nearby properties. We are now re-opening the valve and any affected customers should now be back in supply. We're sorry for any inconvenience.
