  1. Monday's weather: Plenty of autumnal sunshine

    After a chilly start, with some patchy mist and fog in places, there'll be plenty of autumnal sunshine and lots of blue skies. Top temperature: 17C (63F).

    It'll be fairly clear overnight, but not quite so chilly, with lows of around 11C (52F).

  2. Mother begs bust Harlow wedding shop to let brides 'have their dreams'

    A mum has made a plea to a Harlow wedding dress shop which has gone bust, to let customers "have their dreams".

    D&Q Weddings in Harvey Centre went into liquidation last week. It's not clear if women who've bought dresses will get their outfits or their money back.

    Sheila O'Sullivan's daughter Charlie is due to get married next year: "Chances are she won't get a penny of what she's paid back. I'm disgusted, I feel ripped off and I'm terribly disappointed for my daughter."

    BBC Essex has tried to contact the company but has not yet had a response.

  10. Weather: Dry tonight but turning wet tomorrow

    Isolated showers this evening will fade away to leave much of the night dry with clear spells, and perhaps a few mist patches. Turning chilly with light winds, as temperatures fall to 6C (43F) in prone rural spots.

    Sunny spells on Saturday, particularly at first, but an increasing risk of showers or longer spells of rain developing, some heavy with hail and thunder, and perhaps some local flooding. 

    Feeling notably cool with light and variable winds, and temperatures only reaching 16C (61F).

  11. Harlow music venue to close to make way for residential homes

    A Harlow music venue is to close and turned into residential properties after planning permission was granted on Wednesday.

    The Square on Fourth Avenue will make way for 69 new flats and houses after an appeal by South Anglia Housing against Harlow Council’s decision on 13 January 2016 to refuse planning permission.

    The government's Planning Inspectorate has overturned that refusal.

    Councillor Danny Purton said he was "disappointed" at the "loss of a popular music venue".

  13. Britain should 'follow Germany's lead' in migrant crisis, councillors claim

    Two Southend councillors are calling on Britain to be more like Germany in our response to the European migrant crisis.

    Labour councillors Cheryl Nevin and Julian Ware-Lane submitted a motion to Southend Borough Council urging the government to allow unaccompanied children access to Britain. 

    "Britain should be following Germany's lead, of accepting more than one million refugees last year, distributed across hundreds of cities and villages in the country," they said. 

  14. Brentwood diver dies off the Cornwall coast

    A man, who is believed to be from Brentwood, has died following a diving accident off the coast of Cornwall.

    The 67-year-old was recovered unconscious from the water at Porthkerris and airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he was later pronounced dead.

    Two other divers were taken to Plymouth for specialist re-compression treatment after a rapid ascent in the sea on Saturday.

    A police spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing to establish the circumstances, but the death was not thought to be suspicious.

  15. More details on those facing trial over football fan attack

    We have more details on the men who appeared at Basildon Crown Court today, after a football fan was left brain-damaged following an attack in Southend last year.

    Twelve men, who were charged with violent disorder, pleaded not guilty. They were:

    • Lewis Courtnell, 33, of Stadium Road, Southend
    • Jamie Chambers, 22, of Coleman Street, Southend
    • Thomas Randall, 21, of Seaforth Avenue, Southend
    • Michael Shawyer, 30, of Belgrave Road, Leigh-on-Sea
    • Matthew Petchey, 24, of Lascelles Gardens, Rochford
    • Alexander Woods, 24, of Fairmead Avenue, Westcliff
    • Philip McGill, 31, of Hornby Avenue, Westcliff
    • Greg Allen, 28, of Artillery Avenue, Shoeburyness
    • Rhys Pullen, 20, of Bridge Road, Wickford
    • James Woods, 24, of Fairmead Avenue, Westcliff
    • Scott Nicholls, 40, of Sherwood Close, Langdon Hill

    A 13th man, Ian Young, 40, of Brightwell Avenue, Westcliff, who's accused of assisting an offender and possessing a banned weapon has also denied the charges.

    Cambridge United fan Simon Dobbin, who lives in Mildenhall in Suffolk, is still receiving treatment for his injuries.

    All of the defendants have been released on police bail and their trail is due to begin on 5 June.

  16. University of Essex releases statement over Chakrabarti's 'Essex man' comments

    The University of Essex says it "appreciates upset caused" after their chancellor made comments about not wanting to be left "locked in a room with Essex man". 

    Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, who is also a Labour peer, made the comments during the party's conference earlier this week. UKIP MEP Tim Aker has called for her resignation.
