Our live coverage across the day

That's all from me down at Southend beach on what's been a beautiful afternoon.

We finish our live coverage at the end of the world's longest pleasure pier - where a brisk breeze is making light relief from today's heatwave.

We'll be back tomorrow from 08:00 (from our studios in Chelmsford).

Enjoy the Tuesday evening sunshine... I'm off for another paddle for heading home.

Overnight weather: Staying warm and humid

Alex Dolan

BBC Look East weather

It'll remain hot and sunny this evening and stay warm and humid overnight, with temperatures staying around 20C (68F) for most of the region.

Wednesday's weather map

Wednesday will be another hot and sunny day with temperatures reaching up to 30C (86F). It'll stay dry but there'll be a little more cloud in the afternoon, and there's a low risk of an isolated thunderstorm later in the day.

You can get the full forecast where you live, from BBC Weather.

The longest pleasure pier in the world

A trip to Southend wouldn't be complete without a walk along the world's longest pleasure pier - a highlight to many of the millions of visitors who come to the coastal town every year.

Pier entrance

Sadly for me there's no trains running here today, so I've paid my £2 admission and decided to stroll the 1.34 miles (each way that is).

Still, at least the views are nice.

'First ever' black vanilla ice cream created in Southend

During my visit to Rossi, the staff were very excited about their new invention... black vanilla flavoured ice cream.

Black ice cream

At first I thought it was a wind up, but they tell me it's the "first of its kind" to be created in the UK - after recently being invented in New York.

Sadly, it won't be on mass sale, just to a few retailers. Although I'm told it turns your tongue and mouth "black like the Dartford Tunnel".

A childhood dream come true?

Back to the ice cream now.

I think it's fair to say that one of Southend's most famous exports has to be Rossi Ice Cream - and I've been given access to behind the scenes in their processing factory.

Ok - it's not quite Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but Jack and the Ice Cream factory has a ring to it?

Good weather and bad parking in Southend

We've heard complaints about bad parking in Southend.

A Southend-on-Sea council spokesman told the BBC: “Like any successful seaside town, when the sun comes out, the roads and car parks get busier.

"On busy days, parking on the central seafront fills up quickly whilst car parks in the town centre – which are cheaper and only 10 minutes’ walk from the seafront – usually have spare capacity throughout the day.

“We encourage visitors to plan where they will park in advance by visiting or by making use of the two railway lines from London to Southend.

“In addition, we have plans to rebuild our multi storey car park on Victoria Avenue on the way into town, creating more spaces, and are looking into whether we could add levels to our popular car parks at Tylers Avenue and Fairheads Green.”

Southend will have its first own Lagoon by Thursday

Forget Fiji, Iceland or the Cook Islands, come Thursday Southend's very own Lagoon opens to the public.

The Lagoon

... Ok you may be swimming in water from the Thames Estuary but you'll just have to pretend.

Take a trip round Southend's Rossi Ice Cream factory

Jack Warren

BBC Local Live

Behind the Royal's Centre and a stones throw away from the beach sits Southend's Rossi Ice Cream factory.

The company have been making their product here since the 50's and I'm told produces about 2,000 litres of ice cream per day.

It's a tough job.... But somebody had to do it.

Crabbing in Southend... Pokemon Go style

If the weather isn't enough lure you down to the seaside, maybe the fact that Southend is a hive for Pokemon will help.

I've just been doing a spot of digital crabbing... all in the interest of seeing how popular the game is here of course.

A quick paddle to cool off...

Jack Warren

BBC Local Live

It's sweltering down here, sadly I left the trunks indoors so it's just a quick paddle in the sea for me... and then I'm off to visit one of Southend's busiest places on a sunny day - we'll take a look behind the scenes at Rossi Ice Cream.

'Southend has changed for the better'

We've got a call in to Southend council about the parking issue raise by Adventure Island's Andrew Renton... but while making my way to the beach I bumped into day-trippers David and Jennifer who've travelled down today by train from Poplar, London.

David and Jennifer

"As soon as spring is here we're down to Southend", David said.

Jennifer added: "I use to come here when I was little, about two or three, and then ever since... Southend has definitely changed - but for the better."

The couple are here today to enjoy the sun and will head back to the big smoke "once the crowds have died down a bit".

Summer 'sunshine is our oxygen'

Jack Warren

BBC Local Live

As you can imagine, the sun shining is big business for the Essex seaside resort of Southend.

Adventure Island, which employs about 1,000 seasonal and full-time staff, is one of the many companies along the coast that enjoys a boost in good weather.

Andrew Renton

Operations Director Andrew Renton started at the attraction "sweeping up" about 22 years ago.

"Sunshine and good parking are our oxygen", he told me.

"On days like this there are about 15,000 people in the park... but we're suffocated by bad parking".

He added that on some peak days during the summer, visitors can spend up to two hours trying to find a parking space.

From Peter Pan's Playground to Adventure Island

Head towards the Western Esplande in Southend-on-Sea and you'll stumble across Adventure Island, or if you're a certain age you may remember it as Peter Pan's Playground.

Adventure island

Opened in 1976 the amusement park has gone from having just 10 rides to more than 35 attractions. Including this one, which spins and flings riders upside down... I'm fine just watching thank you.

The Claw

Shortly we'll hear from the park's operations director.

What is tourism worth to Essex?

The sunshine not only makes most of us feel great, but a lot of our businesses are dependent on it too.

A historic look back at Southend's famous coastline

"Oh I do like to be beside the seaside" - and crikey, how it's changed over the past 100 years.

The Kursaal is one of Southend's most well-known landmarks. It still stands today, but nowadays you're more likely to find a bowling alley and an arcade rather than the Wall of Death or a lioness.

Weather update: Temperatures set to reach 32C

BBC Weather

You probably don't need us to tell you it's a scorcher today... the good news (depending on your point of view) is that it's set to continue with clear blue skies and sunshine this afternoon.

Feeling hot with the highest temperatures in built up areas, but cooler and breezier at the coast (which is why we've come to Southend). Maximum temperature: 32C (90F).

Taking a lunchtime stroll?

We're live from Southend-on-Sea

Jack Warren

BBC Local Live

Hello and good afternoon to you from the Sunshine Coast. I've ditched our Chelmsford newsroom to bring Essex Live to the seaside and report live from Southend.

You'd be hard pressed to find enough space to lay your towel though as thousands have flocked to the south Essex seaside town to enjoy the hottest day of the year.

Now where's my sun lotion... safety first and all that.

News catch-up: The stories so far today...

Here are the top stories from Essex Live this afternoon:

  • A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man's body was found in a burned-out car in Pitsea

Is it hot enough to cook an egg on a car?

That age old question popped up in the office earlier, so we decided to give our inner Bear Grylls an airing and give it a go... not that we wanted to get egg on our paintwork!

(If you're about to cook lunch, we advise using an oven).

Chelmsford Cathedral to host 'Pokemon Go themed event'

Pokemon Go seems like the biggest craze since Gangnam Style (whatever happened to Psy?)

Now, Chelmsford Cathedral is to host a day dedicated to the digital monsters after discovering its sacred grounds were a bit of a Pokemon hotspot.

People hunting Pokemon
Chris Flynn

"On Friday night there were 60 people hanging about the church yard. They were all at a Pokemon stop", said the Very Rev Nicholas Henshall (Dean of Chelmsford).

"It got us thinking - we want to be very hospitable... I want to be a good host, so from 11:00 on Monday we're going to have a Pokemon themed event".

"We'll start with a little celebration in the Cathedral, and then there'll be coffee, tea, biscuits and crisps available."

Yesterday was hot... will today be hotter?

Here's BBC Look East's weatherman Dan with the scorchio scores on the doors from yesterday... it's set to get even warmer today.

But will the mercury rise higher today?

How hot is your dashboard?

So we've decided to play a game of #heatbingo. How hot is it on your dashboard?

Tweet us a picture like Glen, who has clocked up an impressive 33C (91.4F) in Thundersley. Obviously, don't do it when you're driving...

Vilson Meshi, 30, was found dead inside a grey Audi A4 on Pincey Mead in February. The car had been fire damaged and police discovered a flare inside.

A post-mortem examination found he died from smoke inhalation.

The boy, from London, was arrested earlier and he is currently in custody being questioned by detectives.
